I had butted in on another thread, but here is my own. I have looked a few times at this S+W. Model 65 S.S. It has a stamp of 65-2, on the crane. The gun is not pinned or recessed. The other numbers, also on the crane, are obviously re-stamped with a totally different number. Is this common? It's a Frankengun I guess

The actual serial number is stamped on the butt.

The odd numbers & stamps inside the crane cut are assembly numbers and fitters marks used during manufacturing to keep the crane, cylinder, sideplate and frame together during final fitting and polishing after they had been fitted to each other.

It's not a Frankengun.

Maybe I was not clear. I know the inspection mark, isn't going to match the model number. The inspection mark is re-stamped completely different from original inspection mark. I was told by a very smart poster that a 65-2 should be pinned and recessed.

65-2?

Are you sore it says 65-2? I just checked my wife's 65-2 and it is, indeed, pinned and recessed.

That is correct.
A 65-2 should be P&R.
The 65-3 change in 1982 eliminated the pinned & recessed.

Yoke retension screw/plunger?

I have a M-65-5 and it has the spring loaded yoke srew and plunger.

Curious if your revolver has this?

I have a 65-2 3" from 1982 that is recessed, NOT pinned, and with a large side-plate logo. You may very well have something similar, curious to know the date of manufacture.

The steel K-framed .357 S&W is perfect example of form following function or is it the other way around? A kinda revolverfection if you will.....

tin, keep checking gunbroker, they show up there.the 3 inch is sweet.had one of those ss 64's bobtailed for the tampa sheriff's office way back in the 80's.shoulda never soldit.it was part of a custum order.if you do find one,you can have a slot milled where the front sight goes so you can put a tritium sight in it

Don't worry that it's not P&R. at the time of the change its possible to find pinned gun w/o recessed cylinders and guns with recessed cylinders that don't have pinned barrels.
