First thread ever:

This message is in regards to a new rifle that I love. It is a model 70 featherweight (made by FNH) it is chambered in 270 Winchester. I'm only beginning to put it together, so please provide any information that you may have performed on your.

Have you any particular loads? Bullet type? Powder?

What type of scope are running? (I plan on getting VX3-CDS)

sling type? (Thinking of the Ultimate Sling by speciality outdoors)

Very interested in stock work I should look into

This rifle will be put to use on the Round Valley Indian Reservation which is in Mendocino County CA--Covelo which is B-zone deer-pig rifle. 0-400 is my primary range where we hunt.

Thank guys n gals.

I've got a .30/06, can't comment on .270 loads. But I have a VX-3 2.5-8x36 on mine which I really like. The tube is a little short, so you'll probably need extended rings/bases. I have a Montana Sling on it, seems to work well enough and keeps weight down. My rifle is being pillar bedded now. I should've had it done when I got it, but I was lazy.

These are nice rifles, though. Here's hoping yours gives you many years of faithful service.

With MOST rings the 2.5-8X36 will fit most long actions. There isn't a lot of room to adjust for fit, but the Leupolds have generous eye relief so it will work for most people. The VX-3 in a 3.5-10X40 is longer and should work with just about anything.

Personally, I'd save $150 and buy a VX-2 in a 3-9X40. Three years ago Leupold upgraded their entire lineup and a current VX-2 is using the same coatings and other technology as a 3 year old VX-3. Current VX-3's are improved too, but are not $150 better in my opinion.

I'd highly recommend the Montana sling. Get the narrow 1" version.

If it were my rifle I'd replace the stock with a McMillan Edge, but that is me. Shoot it first. If it shoots fine don't try to fix what ain't broke. Other wise have the recoil lug bedded.

I have several Winchesters, no 270's, including one FN made version in 308. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a good 130 gr load and bullet for all around use. If you ever decide to move up to elk or bear size game a good 150 gr bullet will work just fine.

I think you'll be very happy with your rifle.

I agree with ^^^jmr40^^^ on the vx2 being the better buy.

With the 3-9x40 you can go with low talley one piece mounts and have about an inch to slide the scope back or forth with a long action.

The stocks on all new model 70's are supposed to be free floated. Mine wasn't, and I saw another one in a pawnshop one day that wasn't either. I took care of it with a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a deepwell socket.

As far as the recoil lug, they are bedded at the factory (although I know guys who have rebedded them)

I hope your gun serves you well, they are about the finest production rifles made right now in my opinion.

Welcome to The High Road! Regarding the .270 Win, the age-old stand-by for handloads is 60 grains of H4831, a 130 grain projectile and a large rifle primer. My own M70 (also an FN) is a Super Grade. It is quite accurate, so I have never bothered to replace that dandy walnut. Regarding a scope for mine, I have a Leupold VX3, 3.5-10. For factory ammo, take a look at Federal's "SuperFormance" ammunition. My own .270 Win is even accurate with this factory ammo. My favorite is the SST. It has a muzzle velocity of 3,200 FPS. Two years ago I took a nice deer at a little over 200 yards. By our farm standards, that's a nice, close shot. The deer dropped immediately. Post some photos when you have time.

I don't own a rifle chambered in .270 Win but I did put one together (Kimber Mountain Ascent) for a female friend a few months ago. I bought a Vortex Viper 3-9x40mm scope (BDC reticle) for her and mounted it using Talley one piece rings/bases. I worked up a really good load for the rifle using a Barnes 130gr TTSX bullet, 59.5gr of Reloder 19 and a CCI 200 primer (C.O.A.L. = 3.320"). I put a crimp on the case mouth using a Lee FCD. My friend used the rifle and a Barnes factory 130gr VOR-TX load when she shot a nice whitetail buck through the heart at 168 yards at the end of October. Here's a six-shot group at 100 yards using the Barnes load I worked up. The group measures 0.675" and was shot in about seven minutes from a clean, cold bore. Personally I have no interest in the cartridge but my friend is thrilled with the rifle.

Great choice on the rifle, I have a featherweight in .243 and an Ultimate Shadow SS in .270 and love them both.

As for .270 loads, I tried H4831 sc over 130gr SSTs, and got respectable sub-moa five shot groups. My best load, and the one I settled on though is 130gr SSTs over 54.3gr H4350 with an oal of 3.285 (I believe). That load is not the fastest at 3040 fps, but has turned in some 5 shot groups just over .5 inches. Also, I got two antelope with that load this year, and it preformed great, both dropped in their shadows with complete pass through.

For rings, I use DNZ game reaper one piece on all of my rifles.
