i bought this right hand model 70 featherweight stainless .270 new in the box last summer from a friend and decided to take it out of the box and give it a good looking over, after looking it over closely i,m impressed. i think its a pre portugal assembled rifle, but i,m not sure. serial # 35AMN21356. i have three other pre-NC left hand model 70 classic sporters and this featherweight sure looks as good as the classics, as soon as i get a ss leupold scope to put on it i,ll find out if it shoots as good as the classics. as a old left hander, i have learned to use right hand rifles as a young man and have no trouble useing either . eastbank.

What does the barrel stamp say?
I'm not exactly sure how many different places the newer models were assembled or made in. kind of confusing at this point with the new stamps on the barrel and all I know mine is a few years old with a New Haven Con. Stamped on the barrel and from what I gather it's Pre-SC. If I'm not mistaken they moved production to Portugal in 2013 . Also after 2006 they were no longer made in New haven with a New haven stamp I believe. After 2006 they began being stamped " MADE IN USA* BACO INC. MORGAN UTAH- " not sure of Portugal ones yet. someone here with more can fill in these blanks I'm sure.

Wait I saw the Utah address on the box in your pic which means it was post 2006. That would make it not a New Haven rifle. Not sure that has anything to do with how well that one is made.

I'm pretty certain that rifle is pre-portugal M70, made down in South Carolina. Moreover, I'm pretty sure it's a 2011 Shot Show special edition stainless featherweight. I made the mistake of not snatching one up several years ago when they were all over Gunbroker for fairly reasonable prices. Now days they never seem to come up, and when they do, they are usually in the $900+ range.... Apparently I'm not the only one that has a permanent search set up for them. Congrats on that rifle, it's a real Gem... If you ever decide to sell it, be sure to post it up on the classifieds here!

Here's mine, a model 70 SS bought 12/2012 in .243 with a Leupold VX2 4x12. Mine has a SN of 35AMN181XX. I believe it was from 2011. When I bought this one there was a rebate on it. It is pre Portugal.

I've put 40 rounds though mine since new. At 100 yds I got 3 shot groups of just a little larger then 1/2". May have just been a good day for me, don't know. They had a .257 Roberts in stock and the .243 at one of their other stores, I picked it up the next day.

No regrets.

The AMN code is for 2009 according to my source. It wouldn't be unusual for a rifle to be sold 2 years or longer after it was made. I once bought a Marlin 336 from a K-Mart that had a 10 year old date code on it. Still had the 10 year old price tag too. This was back when California K-Marts stopped carrying guns. Their stock was sent to other states and some deals were available.

If my 2009 date is correct, and I believe it is, that is one of the more desirable FN made guns. It would have been made entirely in SC. I think the Portugal guns are probably just as good, but made in the USA is a plus for most people. Too bad Winchester doesn't make left handed options.

I have a 2008 made 308 Extreme Weather that has become my favorite rifle.

Personally I think a matte black scope looks a lot better on SS rifles anyway. Every scope manufacturer, every mount manufacturer, and every rifle manufacturer makes their SS rifles and silver colored scopes and mounts a different shade of silver. It is not uncommon to see 3 different colors on the rifle, scope and mounts. Basic black goes with everything.

my left hand winchester classic,s and a pre-64 model 70 classic. eastbank.

Jmr40, 2009 is a surprise. I was led to believe they werent available in SS until the shotshow. No problem though, Im happy with the rifle.

Im going on memory though because i think i remember seeing sc on the barrel.

Let me recommend using a little bit of grease on the locking lugs before you shoot. I have an older, New Haven stainless M70 action and I have had galling issues between the lugs and receiver seats. Maybe they changed things later, maybe not. Anyway, a bit of grease between the lugs and receiver keeps this problem to a minimum.

+1
I always grease stainless bolt actions, it seems like most of them are subject to galling to some extent, but a decent grease makes it a none issue.
