Model Identification

I have a Smith & Wesson 38 special CTG. It appears to be a pre-model 10.
How can I find out positively this is correct?

SO, you have a S&W that shoots the .38 S&W Special CARTRIDGE.
CTG = Cartridge.

If you could post a partial serial number, with the last three x's, along with a description or photo, someone could probably figure it out.

There is an "L" above "7562". It is a 5 screw Smith and the butt plate has an
S940xxx on it.

Need the first three numbers, not the last three.
X out the last three, or not, since we already know what they are now.

Sxxx690 could be any number of N-Frame years & models.

The S prefix makes it NOT a K-Frame pre-Model 10 however.

I agree, and the model name would be the "Military & Police" model (and "of 1905, 4th Change" to be totally, anally correct!).

That one was made in 1947. I have a 5" variant a few thousand away from that in the production run.

That is a nice gun in excellent original condition. Take good care of it!

If you mean a reference, the "bible" is the "Standard Catalog of Smith &Wesson" by Supica and Nahas. Latest is 3rd ed., 2006.

If you mean that you have the original maroon box that is numbered to it, that is really a plus. If you need other info on these, you can pm me, these transition guns are among my favorites.
