I read about some of these newer assault rifles, particularly "milspec" ones, having a 20-25K rd barrel life. Is this a good thing? Wouldn't accuracy be rather adversely impacted over the life of the barrel?
In most Govt cases barrel life is ruled by a throat erosion GO/NO-GO guage. Once it reaches the NO-GO line the barrel gets replaced.
The vast majority of individuals who are issued the weapons cannot shoot accurately enough to take full advantage of a rifles accuracy potential. Most would be unable to tell a 1.5 MOA gun from a 3 MOA gun.
That being the generality, I have seen some superb iron sight shooters. Usually they are guys who shoot and or compete on their own time too.
I have a 20 in. Bushmaster chrome lined barrel with 24000 rounds thru it. The throat is 5/8 of an inch down the barrel and still shoots under an inch at 100yds(scoped).
If you want longevity and are willing to sacrifice accuracy(very slightly) chrome lined is the only way to go.
