Modifying 3/8 dovetail sight to 5/16?

i have a revolver with a 5/16 dovetail sight but can only find 3/8 dovetail replacements. i wondered if the following is possible?

heres my theory:
since 3/8 = 6/16 and the dovetail is 5/16 can i shave a 1/16 off a 3/8 dovetail sight? seems like it might work?

any thoughts or has anyone done this? thanks for any help or suggestions.

If your only cut the sight and not the gun, why not?

Or just cut a 3/8 dovetail in the revolver.
