Modifying a Mosin to take a German bayonet lug?

How easy or not do you think this would be? How much do you think a gunsmith would charge?

I guess the obvious question is why do you want to put a German bayonet on a Mosin Nagant? Can't you get a bayonet for a Mosin Nagant?

Typical Mauser installation has the lug built into the nose cap, shown below. Considering that nose cap does not fit a Mosin, it would take considerable effort in grinding and welding to make it work. And some artistic ability to make it look not horrible.

You don't say what model Mosin Nagant you are considering. Models with attached bayonets have their own issues with removing/modifying the existing setup.

And, it goes without saying that any professional work would probably cost more than the worth of the rifle.

You could buy one of the Polish wz 91/98/26 conversions to 8x57 and you'd have the one.

"...gunsmith would charge..." A smithy very likely wouldn't take the job. Unless he's very new. Minimum shop charges start at $20 per hour and go way up. Machining starts at over $100 per hour plus set up time. Like Dain Bramage says, it'd cost you more than the rifle is worth.

The short answer is that you can't get there from here without major modification to the Mosin stock and metal barrel bands assuming it is a Russian. Easiest to do so would be using some sort of the older Mauser barrel bands 93,94,95, 96 with the underlying lug rather than the German 98 and similar variants. If you have a Finnish variant, they did something like the older Mauser mounts for their Mosin variants but they substantially redesigned stocks, barrels, and other hardware to fit their rifles.

I agree that the cheapest is to simply buy a Mosin bayonet.

Welp, that is the silliest thing that I have read today ... but the sun is not yet down, so there is still time ...

IMO, having a gunsmith to do this would probably cost more than an average unmodified Mosin is worth and would seriously reduce its unmodified market value.
