I need advice from you Blackpowder experts. I posted before and I learned that the Swedish M67 chamber can be lengthened to take a 50/70. Can the Swedish M67/89 barrel be changed and the rifle converted to a 45/70. Has this been done and how much could it cost?

Can't think of any reason not to, my roller started off as a .43 Egyptian and I rebarreled it to .45/70.

Thanks for replying. Did you just have to replace the barrel or did the rolling block mechanism need to be machined? How much did it cost you to make the change? Did you add a aperature sight to it? And, did you shop around looking for the least expensive rolling block. There are quite a few countries that used the rolling block.

The original rifle cost me 400 dollars. It was an Egyptian contract gun from 1873 ish. I bought a Green Mountain barrel blank for 110.00. They have gone up in price, threaded it to match the receiver, chambered it, cut the extractor slot, made an extractor, made the stock. I did put an aperture sight on as well as a folding rear sight and a flip up front sight. So as to cost with all the pieces parts was around 650.00 dollars 15 years ago. Was well worth the time and effort plus a great project. Lots of fun lobbing bowling balls at a target 500 yards plus.

You mean like this one?

The chamber is very, very close to a 50/70 and some will even accept 50/70 without alteration. It can be altered with a 50/70 chamber reamer. The real issue you'll encounter is the rifling. In my case, the rifling looked good, but it wouldn't stabilize any bullet/powder load I tried. The culprit was wear in the throat area that wasn't easily seen without an endoscope. I wound up having it relined by Bobby Hoyt and the first 3 rounds out of my reline went into 1.5" at 100yd.

Now if you want to make it into a 45/70, my rifle started life as a 50cal but I could easily have changed this to 45/70 during the reline process. I already have one 45/70 and I wanted this 1869 original to shoot the grand daddy of the 45/70

The cost to do what I’ve done to mine-
The gun
Reline barrel. $175
Lee Shaver Soule sights- front globe, rear vernier, spirit level, Hadley eyecup $425

The Soule sights are not technically period correct, but I don’t mess around on sights iron or otherwise

I have an 8x58RD version. Wondering the same things, maybe a different type of conversion. Someone here gave me a chamber insert for 32 H&R. Works great.
