 So I'm trying to get my .223 rifle zeroed to a respectable degree at 200 yards and I'm having some trouble maintaining consistancy in my groups. Some groups will be 3 shots inside of a dime, others will fly 5 inches in any direction. I feel that the biggest problem (next to my shooting ability) is my ammo. I can shoot about 1 3/8" group at 200 with factory 55gr Win white box. I have heard that with a barrel like mine, 26" bull 1:9 twist, I need a heavier bullet. I have narrowed it down to two choices, Black hills 68gr BTHP Moly coated vs. non moly coated.
What are the benefits of going with a moly coat over the non moly coated. Can I still clean my barrel frequently? If I get it nice and zeroed in at 200 with the moly coated bullets, then go clean the gun really good, am I going to mess it all up? Is the moly coating more for longevity of shelflife?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks,
Matt

By all accounts, moly should make the barrel last a little longer. MK is easier to clean, shoots more accurately for longer periods between cleaning and will settle in quicker after cleaning. If you shoot moly, you need to start with a barrel that is absolutely clean. If you shoot copper in a moly'd barrel, you'll need to start over and clean the barrel down to bare metal again. It'll take about 20rds of MK to get the barrel settled in from bare metal.

If you shoot moly, I recommend keeping the barrel oiled ASAP after firing. It can get pitted quicker than a non MK barrel if you don't keep oil in the tube.

first off i would check that ALL SCREWS everywhere are nice and tight, then the same for the scope setup. then check your bbl free float with a piece of paper, making note of where the pressure points are, then take to the range and heat it up. check the bbl float again, it the pressure points have changed , then waa-laa! you know what up. as for moly coat goes, i do it to everything that i decide is a shooter. let me show you two of my guns , i also did thsi to a mosin 38 and a parker hale post ww2 .308 and they are just as good.
