My wife has never been an anti- by any measure.....and she's accommodated my interest in and use of guns for as long as we've been married (meager resources permitting).

Even when I began to get serious about personal security and obtained my CCW, she had no real objections, knowing that I handle ALL firearms safely and keep them away from the kiddies.

But.......

She's never really come on board with the need to think about personal security herself and has not been at all interested in learning to safely handle firearms (hence, she doesn't know the combo. to the Gun Vault). She (wisely) would not entertain the idea of carrying a weapon in her purse, because she knew she was not properly trained and felt she was to hurried with our small children and would likely make a deadly mistake.

Even after we had a night time confrontation at a public park with a drunk and she had a road rage nut follow her 4 miles on the way to drop off the kiddies at school, she still didn't seem concerned. I haven't been too thrilled by her apparent apathy, but have decided not to push it.

So......

I was pleasantly surprised when she made arrangements for a sitter last weekend so she could come to the range with me and learn how to shoot!

The trip worked out perfectly. I wanted our time to be fun, so we stopped at Dunkin' Donuts for a coffee first. We had really nice weather (not typical January conditions around here) and we pretty much had the range to ourselves. She listened to me go through the 4 rules and explain the gun actions (shot a 6" revolver and 9mm Millennium Pro). She wasn't intimidated by the noise or recoil and even tried full load .357s. She was putting them in the black before to long and enjoying herself. The few folks we encountered at the range were all very polite and just as we were packing up, a guy set up next to us and was teaching his ~18 year old daughter to shoot.

After all that..............she said I was a good teacher and wants to go again. :)

Now in all honesty, I'm not really looking for her to become my "gun buddy", as I actually prefer to go to the range by myself, so I can do things at my own pace and concentrate.......but I'm pretty darn thrilled that she is interested in learning how to use these important tools.

I forwarded her an e-mail with a recently posted article and video clip showing a woman clerk at a convenience store, who, after giving a robber the $ had to shoot him when he demanded that she go with him. My wife responded "good for her" and then considered that "she hoped she would never have to shoot anybody".

Bingo!!!

She's starting to put herself into other peoples shoes and to consider that she can empower herself to do something.

was it Willie Nelson who sang....

Good for you!! I wish mine would come around...she is still in the stage where yours was before she went to the range with you:banghead:

Good On Ya!

How's that 9mm Millenium Pro working for her?

My "Lady of Occasional Shooting" will be learning to shoot hers this spring, after she's gotten comfy with the Ruger MkII.

I keep my ears peeled for positive material on her first gun.

First part sounds like my wife. She tolerates my hobby but since I got my CCL she still doesn't understand why I want to wear a gun when we go out. I sincerely hope it doesn't take a weapon needed incident to show her why.

Excellent. :)

Shame you don't want a shooting buddy. Maybe you're going to need to find another couple who both own guns, so she'll have someone to shoot with?

she liked the revolver better.....

accept it was to heavy for her to hold up.

she thinks a smaller revolver might be the ticket....

it's not that I don't want a shooting buddy.....but rather I concentrate better and accomplish more by way of training when I'm alone.
