About a month ago I went to visit the family over a weekend. I don't get to see them as often as I like with the price of gas and it being a four hour trip. My oldest uncle was to be there and being a shooter as well we decided to have a family outing and go shooting. This was mainly my mothers idea.
I have been shooting my whole life. My father and all of my uncles were shooters in one form or another and passed that knowledge to me and as long as I can remember my mother was never a shooter. She wasn't and isn't anti but was just never into it I suppose. I never could get her to tell me why until recently. Seems my father gave her some very large caliber rifle to shoot when I was very young and it hurt and bruised her shoulder and just turned her off from shooting. I do remember her telling me a few stories of her shooting with her brothers when she was young but no mattered what I tired over the years I could never get her to go shooting with me. The only thing she has ever mentioned over time was that she wanted a .22lr pistol to carry with her when she is riding her horses.
I loaded up my new Savage Predator Hunter and Fn Fiveseven and headed home. When I arrived and walked into the kitchen there was a new ruger MkIII sitting on the kitchen table. I thought this was one of my Uncles firearms and picked it up, cleared it and started looking at it. She walked in from her bedroom and said, "You like my new gun". I blinked a little confused while she grinned. Seemed she happened to tell my Uncle the same story she always told me about wanting a .22lr pistol and he went out and bought her one. I thought this was very cool of him since she could not stop grinning. We all went shooting the following morning and we taught her how to clean the pistol, load the mags, shoot it and reinforced the safety rules which she does know. I set up targets for her and she started having the time of her life she kept shooting till her fingers and thumbs where sore from loading mags. She did rather well for someone that hasn't fired a weapon in many years. I shot very little because I was having a blast helping her and watching her with that grin. She even strapped my Uncles Ruger .45LC's on her hips and shot those which really suprised me. Thankfully, I remembered to take my video camera along and recorded the morning. I have learned a lesson here, if you want your mother to shoot with you buy her a gun. Now, she wants to get her CCW so she can take her pistol with her to the farm. I told her she didn't need a CCW for that and she said, "I want a CCW license so I can take it to Little Rock with me. I'd been wanting to get my CCW for some time but kept putting it off for one reason of another but her comment started me thinking about it. Remembering the "buy your mom a gun" lesson, I called her back and asked if she was serious and she said yes and asked her if that was something she would like to do together and she thought that was the neatest idea and said yes. I then called my favorite gundealer in the area who does conceled carry classes and found a class on a weekend I had off from work and book the two of us to take the class in a couple of weeks. I called her back to told her the dates and times and she was overjoyed.
I wasn't going to post this story to begin with but I made a few clips of that weekend and uploaded them to my Youtube account for other family to see. The more I watched the clip of her haming it up at the after shooting photo session, I could not resist sharing this with the good people of the Highroad. It is just too funny and no, just like Bonny, she doesn't smoke.

I know that I don't go into Little Rock without my pistol, so I understand her concerns. Just get her to keep practicing with that .22, as she can use it to qualify for her permit, since it is a semi-auto.

That is a neat story. I remember when I was younger my mom would take my brother, sister and I into the country and let us shoot. Usually just a .22 rifle, but it was great fun. Her dad, my grandpa, was an avid sportsman and hunter, and he taught me a lot of things about how to properly handle guns, and gun safety. He passed away in 1978, I miss him very much!!!

That's a great story there. I hope she has as much fun with her Mark III as I've had with mine.

And good lesson for anyone who might ever contemplate the possibility of playing a "joke" on a woman who has never shot before by giving her too much gun.

Hey 3KillerBs, how well does practice with the mark III transfer to centerfire pistols?(I might get one, am thinking the grip angle won't let practice transfer over as well.)

Hey, right or wrong....my mother (80's) has been packing a Colt mustang since they made em...no chl or anything...before that an old Colt .25.

Let me say, I'm a career LEO and don't really agree with it, but you can't fight mama soooooo:what:.....she does and always will and that's the way it is!

By the way..she really can shoot.

Tall Pine, I believe that is what she realy wanted but my uncle thought an auto would be more practical all around. Thats why he got that one. She made the comment she still wanted a cowboy gun:) Don't worry she will get it.
