MONARCH .223 AMMO

I found a bunch of Monarch .223 ammo for real cheap, does anybody know if it is corrosive to the barrel like wolf ammo (Im not tearing down wolf ammo), I just prefere not to shoot it. But I was wondering if the Monarch is cheap because of the caseing like Blazer or if it is not good ammo to use in an AR-15.

Last time I checked, Wolf ammunition wasn't corrosive. Never has been.

I don't use either Monarch or Wolf so I cannot say if it is good in your AR.

wolf/monarch monarch/wolf. imported by same co. wolf steel is made by tcw, jsc, barnaul in russia. If it is brass case, it is all made in E. europe, usually by S&B.

I bought two boxes of .223 Monarch to try it out.
Have only shot one box.
One fired case jammed in the chamber so tight I had to knock it out with a steel cleaning rod.
It's very inaccurate, about like Wolf.

I won't buy anymore.

It's claimed that neither one is corrosive.

Gun range is were I heard it the first time, and then again at the gun store, thats why Im posting here I needed to know if its not good to use in an AR.

I was responding to BigDaddy, letting him know Wolf was noncorrosive and asking where he heard that it was.

You'll find lots of information about ammo for an AR on AR15.com. They have tons of information and user reviews. You will get mixed opinions about shooting Wolf (steel case) ammo. Lots of people didn't like the older lacquer coated cases because they tended to form a sticky residue in the chamber. The newer polymer coated cases seem to do quite well. Wolf also sells a brass cased ammo that is supposedly loaded to M193 specs.

I don't see any reason, myself, for not using Wolf ammo for plinking and informal shooting. I have begun to shoot it now and then because of the rising cost of ammo in general.

i just bought some monarch 223 in academy they are fine so far!!they have a protective coat of some kind?i have the steel full metal jackets 55 gr. and i ran 20 rounds through it at about 75 yards and they arent any less accurate than my hornady fpd if your shootin 500 yards maybe they suck??..up close and for the range or backyard go for it get a box and try em out! i wasnt disapointed at all.

Monarch steel case ammo is reliable cheap ammunition in my experience. I have shot .223 in ARs and Sig556 without problems.

As I understand it, Monarch is a store brand that is actually Brown Bear. Check out ar15.com under Ammo for some threads to confirm this. I would think there's nothing wrong with using it if your gun cycles it. The only AR I have that doesn't like the steel cased stuf is the Bushmaster DCM Match. The other ARs (several brands, including a Colt Match Target) cycle it with any problems.

Monarch is not made by Wolf (which is in fact made by the Tula factory) but instead its made by the Barnaul Tool Plant. Barnaul has made many different brands of ammunition over the years (Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Golden Bear, Red Star, ect...) and all of them tend to be more or less the same and slightly superior to Wolf ammo in accuracy and power, in my personal experience.

I have around 1200 rounds of Monarch ammo and bought that much because it shot so well through my Mini-14. I can get 2.5-4" groups at a hundred yards with open sights. How well it shoots depends on me and how well my 52 year old eyes are working that day.

Thats about as well as I can shoot any open sighted rifle I own. I wish i had bought more of the Monarch ammo when it was available for less than $5 a box. Its fine for blasting ammo. its also fine for any other place a FMJ round is needed.

A 4" group with a mini is about as good as you can hope for. Still I find the quality somewhat lacking in Monarch. Given today's market however if you can find it cheap you can buy and "deal with it".
