OK. Your rich uncle just died on the poor farm. You have won the lottery. You have a major profitsharing check. (Interest rates ARE up!) What have you always wanted? A full custom revolver! My personal choice is a Ruger. Vaquero in 45 Long Colt. I want it to have a 2" tube, birdshead ivory checkered grips, Bisley hammer and trigger, no ejector, Belt Mountain locking base pin, opened up rear sight, brass bead front sight, blued completely except for the stainless steel high polish gripframe and a Power Custom free spin pawl and Wolff springs. I want a non-fluted cylinder and a little acorns and oak leaves engraving. The cylinder chambers would be reamed to proper dimensions and the forcing cone would be cut to 11 degrees. The cylinder would be beveled on the leading edge. What is your custom revolver?

I want a NIB S&W Registered Magnum, bone stock and just exactly like it left the factory. If I had piles of money I would buy one, and it would cost as much as a new fully loaded pickup at the least. Since the odds of winning the lottery are better than the odds of finding a NIB reg mag I will make a second choice.


I want one of the VERY few pre-model 29's, THE 44 Magnum 5 screw 6.5" guns with full coverage engraving. There are a few out there, nearly all are NIB and from what I can tell cost about what a small car does. That is my choice for the custom gun I would choose.

As far as a custom gun, it'd be a 45 Ruger SA with a five-shot line-bored recessed cylinder, flat top strap, 5 1/2' octagon barrel, case hardened hammer & frame, brown or polished blue barrel, polished blue frame, ivory micarta grips.

Then I'd have a 7 1/2" 44 spl on a flat top 357, then recessed 44 spl and 45 colt conversions on model 28s.

Looks like I'd spend a fortune on customs guns if I could.

Blued Smith and Wesson M27 with a three and a half inch barrel, and some tasteful engraving (i.e. not the whole damn gun). Cocobolo grips, and polished and rounded trigger, with a trigger pull of maybe 8.5 lbs DA, and 3.5 lbs SA.

I'd treat myself to a nitre-blued Colt Python with full coverage engraving and gold inlay work, plus woolly mammoth ivory stocks. It probably wouldn't set me back much over $15 K.

Blue, N frame, fixed sight, round butt, 4" heavy barrel, 45 convertable Colt/ACP, Would be a Mod 22 me thinks. I want it to look like a model 58 converted to 45 caliber. With the long cylinder for 45 Colt and the 45 ACP cylinder cut for moonclips. In 45 Colt this would be a great gun for Woods and H/SD, having it in 45 ACP would make it great for Gaming and Carry. add a slight bit of engraving and a gold band inlet at the cylinder line and around the barrel. Color case hardened smooth target trigger and wide spur but shortened hammer. Add a nice set of Spegel cocobolo grips

My choice is one of the S&W Heritage K-22's with the Turnbull case-color finish on the frame, the bright blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, and elephant ivory square-butt conversion grips with inlaid S&W medallions.

Low-barrel DA/SA target revolver in 9mm ah-la the mythical Mataba M207. Of course, it would have to have a custom holster to go with it and a beutiful bluing job that you feel like you could swim in.

With a relatively weak round like the 9mm you'd have really minimal muzzle flip. Heavy rounds in this configuration would likely just hurt. 9mm over .38 special for moon clips and shorter OAL.

I hear lots of people talk about this kind of pistol but the closest thing I've ever seen is the Mataba Unica 6 which is just way too big and heavy for what it is, although I still want one in .454 Cassul.

With an unlimited budget I'd go for no guns to start with and a complete machine shop to do my own development and cusomizing. It would have to have pressure testing equipment for devloping wildcats too.

My current PC 625 'Miculek' is about as perfect as it gets. So maybe get it engraved?

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm working on getting a model 28-2 hard chromed. I suppose if it were engraved too and tricked out with some gunsmithing, that would be the ultimate too.

In the end, other than engraving, I own my two favorite revolvers.

Mine would be a pre-29 that had all the touches of a pre-27...


Cross checked top strap and barrel, barrel itself would be a tappered 1950s target style barrel(probably off that of a pre-24). Basically make a 1950s Target Model 5 screw 44Magnum.


It would be an awesome gun to have in a collection of 1950s Target Models so it would fit in with all the rest. The heavy barrel on the 44Mag appears to have been carried through the model years until the eventual release of the "mountain gun".


I just can't stand the words "mountain gun" engraved into the barrel though. Probably the closest I will come to my goal of a 1950s Target 29 will be as follows...

Take my 29-3 that I have now, get a 24-3 barrel and ship it off to be cross cut along with the top of the frame when it's installed. Then have the entire gun nicely reblued as best as possible.

Won't have the P&R features though, would like to do it with a 29-2 keeping the cylinder/frame matched.


Such are the desires of a person who is dead nuts for 1950s target model N-frames. That's what happens when your first handgun is a pre-model number 38/44 Outdoorsman.
