Greetings,
I purchased a Remington 700 ltr in .223.
If memory serves(always questionable) it has
a 1/ 9 20 inch fluted barrel.I bought some Black Hills remanufactured
ammo,68 grain hp. :D On the box it says that
I should be using the heavier 72 grain and up for my
twist.Of course I'll get some heavier ammo to try,
does anybody have any input on this.
For some reason the .223 bullet weight/twist rate
baffles me
Thanks

1/9 twist should stabilize 69gr. SMK and lighter just fine.

For the heavier bullets you want a faster twist, though with a 20" barrel on a bolt action you may be able to push the envelope a bit with handloads and get good results.

See www.ammo-oracle.com for more information.

Many people are shooting sub MOA groups with 69gr FGMM SMK, 75gr Hornady match, and 77grain FGMM SMK in the 700P, and 700p-LTR's. So rest easy. ;) :D

Sometimes, you've just gotta buy a few boxes and experiment. My .223 Savage bolt gun won't shoot 75 Hornadys or 77 SMKs. My old Bushmaster 20" A3 upper shot the same with decent results. Generally speaking, 1:9 will stablize bullets from the 69-75 grain range, won't know 'til you try though.

Try the BHM blue box 52 mhp too just for giggles, the 9 twist should stabilize them fine and lots of people are reporting great accuracy. They are one of the best out of my 1/9, so far the 69 mhp from Hornady is the only other real star.
