I live in the "wonderful" state of California and was not smart enough to purchase an ar-15 before the last ban. Other than accepting the crazy looking Bushmaster with the fixed magazine that you almost have to disassemble the rifle to reload, what options are open to me? Can i buy a used pre-ban registered gun from a third party? Are there any modifications i can make to a new one to keep the detachable mag, but change something else?
HELP!!

You cannot buy someone elses registered Assault Weapon.

However, there are a couple options for CA ARs. None of them are very appealing to me, but they're out there. Have you been over to http://www.calguns.net and read about Off-list lower receiver rifles? Basically, you can build an AR using a non-listed/banned lower receiver, BUT it must be configured legally. That means the mag must be pinned in place or you can run without a pistol grip and have a detachable mags. If you go the detachable mag and no grip route, you CANNOT have any evil features (pistol grip, folding stock, flash hider, forward handgrip, etc)

You're probably wondering, "How can I shoot a gun with no grip?!" .. Here are two options:

It's a lot to explain.. go over to calguns and start reading up. It's imperative that you understand the laws for yourself, because if you mess up and configure something wrong, you could end up with an illegal assault weapon.

Thanks

I looked at these sites. Thanks for the info. It was useful. what is your opinion on the grip/stock combo? Does it help or hinder the ability to shoot accurately?

I havent shot either one, but I've held them at the store. I like the U-15 grip the best because it gives more positive control. Your thumb wraps around like a normal rifle grip. It sure does make for a hideous rifle though :(
