Sooo, last evening I was sitting in front of the boob tube, watching the political debate and playing with my Paterson. Decided to see how well that loading tool (wrench end) worked, so removed the barrel and cylinder and
began removing the firing cones. The threads of the first cone was covered in red rust! "Nuts!" I muttered. I removed the other four cones and and found they were rusted too!

I took a small bore light and inspected the interior chambers. There were a few flecks of rust in each chamber, but it hadn't pitted the chambers as yet.
I cleaned the cones and scrubbed out the chambers, after which I re-oiled
everything. I found this surprising as the pistol had arrived sealed in a plastic bag covered with a liberal coating of oil. Makes me wonder what the interior
of the pistol frame looks like. For the amount of money I paid for this Paterson, it should have arrived in perfect condition! End of rant.

What's the proof date code that's stamped on the new Paterson, it's 2 letters in a square box?

Did the Paterson have any powder residue left in the chambers from having been proof tested?

Was it sold as "unfired"?
I have a 3rd Generation Colt that was unfired for many years and it was very hard to get it apart due to the factory grease.

FYI

My recent Pietta Paterson had metal filings inside the water table area throughout the bolt and trigger area. I cleaned all of it out of the gun but like you, I expected better quality for the price paid. Another problem area was the breach where the hand engaged the cylinder ratchet The hand itself had very rough finish so I stoned it and polished it up. That helped smooth the action quite a bit. Let us know when you shoot it.....

Sometimes if parts are not neutralized..all salts removed after bluing, surface rust can form. Those threads probably trapped some of those salts. Good thing you caught it when you did.
