I imagine that nearly all are aware that the concealed carry bill
passed in the KS Senate, and out of the KS House late last
week. Gov. Sebelius has agreed to meet with the NRA this
week, is still talking to pro-gun people, and has NOT vetoed
the bill - as has been reported.

The Governor has gone out of her way to not specifically say
"I will veto concealed carry" - to avoid painting herself into a
corner, apparently. She has said something like, 'I am inclined
to veto a concealed carry bill other than for retired law enforcement
officers'.

Our best sources indicate that we may be able to convince
her to let it become law without her signature, which it
automatically does if she doesn't veto it within 10 days
of it reaching her desk. She is a very political person and is
unlikely to respond without a huge outpouring of support
for concealed carry. This is our chance to make a difference.

Please contact the Governor, and if you have called, please
e-mail & write a brief letter.
MORE IMPORTANT ---
Please get AT LEAST TWO ADDITIONAL PEOPLE to
call and e-mail the Governor.

Your call will be answered by a real person, so be nice and
just give a brief statement ASKING the Governor to not
veto the bill, and if she has trouble signing it, just let it become
law without her signature.

Snail mail:
Governor Kathleen Sebelius
Capitol, 300 SW 10th Ave.,
Ste. 212S
Topeka, KS 66612-1590

Be brief, polite and don't spend much time trying to convert
anyone. Just state your support for HB 2798, the concealed
carry bill, and ASK for her support.

We may yet win this one!

Thanks

I just talked to Nick in the gov's office. According to him, the bill hasn't actually reached Sebelius' desk yet.

According to this from the Legislature's web site, it looks like it's there now, or will be before this day is out:

I just spoke with Nick, nice guy. It reached her desk today. He said she was reviewing the verbage on the bill.

Lets all do our part and let them know how we stand. He asked so I gave him my name. I wonder if they record who calls and how many people? I talked to a different person on Tuesday and he didn't ask my name.

Would people calling from out of state be a good thing, a bad thing or just a waste of time?

I'm tempted to call, but then it just looks like the Evil NRA has recruited people around the country to pester them (although up until last August I was a life long Kansan and part of the reason I left was for CCW)

About out-of-state folks calling, if you are brief, to the point & say something about how well CCW has worked in your state, I don't see that would cause a problem. Everybody has to decide for themselves.

Bad gun bill in Kansas

ed_cec_kansasguns 35 lines

Kansas legislators made a serious mistake on guns last week. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, fortunately, will do the right thing and undo it.

The Kansas House approved legislation granting residents older than 21 the right to carry concealed handguns. The Senate had previously approved the measure.

The governor, however, said she would veto it. With that veto, pressure will build on House members who voted against the legislation to switch positions and help override the veto. At least six state representatives who opposed the concealed-carry bill would have to change their votes for an override to succeed. That would be unfortunate.

Although touted as a personal safety issue, concealed carry only adds to the risks for all Kansans, particularly children, by increasing the availability of guns. The combination of an abundance of guns, the lack of proper safety features on many weapons and frequent carelessness of adults leads to the gun deaths of 12 American children every day.

That grim statistic will not be reduced by adding more guns to the mix.

Well the red star sure are holding their normal course. Four thousand three hundred and eighty children are killed every year? Wonder where they came up with this.

I wouldn't mention the NRA; but, it very well might help to let the gov. know why you left, so long as you are brief and polite. And if CCW might entice you back more often to visit friends and SPEND MONEY it might not hurt to let her know that, as well.

...at any rate, Be Nice! ....Have I said that before? :D

BTW, let's see now....I went to the rally, I've called the Gov, sent her an Email, and mailed her a letter. Anything else I can do? How about the rest of you? Have you done everything you can to get your message through? :banghead:

I think we can win this, if enough of us do our part! :D

You could also encourage her to "not sign" and let the bill pass by default.

Point out that Kansas is in a strict minority of no-issue states, and it's only a matter of time. Tell her to not waste the political capital on a veto, when Kansas CCW is an inevitibility.

You could also remind her how nearby Wisconsin nearly missed passing CCW by one vote on veto override this past winter, and the Democrats here may well have cost themselves several seats in the upcoming fall elections. If they do, they'll have lost those seats to only delay the bill by one year. And the new bill will probably be even less restrictive since fewer Democrats will have to be bargained with to pass it. If that turns out to be the case, I'd like to ask WI's govenor Doyle, and the Democratic leadership if it was worth it in 2005...

The "no issue" states are a very small minority, and it shouldn't be worth it to the anti's to lose their seats over mere delays.

AJ, I expect that most of us have been urging her to just let the bill become law without her signing it. That seems to be more likely than completely changing her mind. A few years ago in Kansas a gov who was personally opposed to capital punishment allowed a death penalty law to become law without being signed.

GOT IT! My wife called the Governor's office today! That's what we need. Encourage our better halfs to get involved in this and express their views. :D

Actually, I suspect that my wife's view will carry a lot more weight, with the Governor on this, than mine. This thing has been pretty much driven by the women since introduction of HB 2798 in the House by Rep. Candy Ruff.

Yep! I believe women can make the difference on this matter. Hope that lots of them are contacting the Gov. :)

Of course, it would be good for you women on THR to encourage your better halfs to get involved in this and express their views to the Governor, too. The more people we can get to join this party the better! :D

Sorry - this was a duplicate post - not sure how I managed to do it; but, have been unable to delete it - Perhaps a moderator can do that for me.

Called, talked to Nick. Encouraged a signing or a pass-with-no-signature. Told him I like to travel through states that let me defend myself with a card that lets me do so, and is safer for me because arming/disarming opens the door to possible mistakes that could lead to the gun being negligently fired. The less I fumble with the gun, the safer it is for everyone. :)

DRAT! I forgot to mention reciprocity! *smacks forehead*

I just talked to Ben, in the Gov.'s office, about 30 minutes ago, and he said she hadn't signed or vetoed it yet. Expressed my support for the bill (again) and he asked for my name and City.

They're counting, folks. :D

Hope all you Kansans in favor of CCW (HB 2798) are taking the time and making the effort to call, write, and/or Email and make your position known. It's been easy to get through on the phone, and the folks in her office have been real nice. It's VERY apparent that they are keeping a tally of those in favor and opposed.

If you have already called, Email. If you have already Emailed, write. If you have already written, get your better half to call, write and/or Email. If you have already done that, get a friend to call .......

Now's the time to express your views to the Gov.!

The bill went to her office on March 8, and the ten days will be up come Sunday so this is the week it will be decided. :banghead:

Be Nice! ... Have I said that before? :D
