moron's behind the counter

This morning I headed out to LAX Guns (near LAX how 'bout that!) to shoot my HP. They open at 12PM on Sundays and I got there at about 12:10. Parked out front and saw no one in the store front. Went in and plunked my range bag on their counter to be checked in and waited. The clerk opens my bag and rifles through it. I tell him the pistol is in the side pocket, but he continues mucking around. :( Then he goes to the side pocket and pulls the HP. Pushes the slide back to check the chamber and then dries fires the pistol. Now I am bit frustrated, but I go with it. After that, he drops the hammer and turns and says, "Don't let anyone catch you with this."

"With what?" I reply. "You took off the safety. This gun is unsafe." says he. ***? I tell him the pistol is perfectly safe and it shoots every time I pull the trigger. He then gives me a lecture on how unsafe my HP is and that if I ever shoot anyone I will get in trouble. I politely tell him that "IF" I ever shoot someone, it will be on purpose and the safety won't be the issue. Not wanting to cause a scene, I give him my ID, get my targets, and head out to shoot. :(

An hour later, I come out and there are tons of customers in the store. He pointedly takes other customers ahead of me until one gentlemen pipes up, "I think he's (meaning me) was here first." The clerk turns to me, asks me if I'm done in a real smart a** tone. I nod and he gives me my total. I hand him my cash and he dramatically tosses my change on the counter in front of my waiting hand. That's it. I'm officially pissed. :fire:

I cock my finger and motion him over. When he gets close, I ask him what days he works. He asks me why, and I tell him because I don't want to see him lazy a** ever again and if he ever dry fires one of my sidearms without permission he and I will have a serious problem.

On the plus side I had a great time on the range and shot well (for me). 250 rounds of Speer 147gr HP (the cheap "no leo practice only" stuff floating around) of pleasure. :D Too bad this dumb a** had to be a part of my day.

ps - I'm going to give the owner a call during the week. I'd like to let him know his counter help on the weekends is too busy giving out free legal advice instead of providing customer service.

I live in So. Cal as well and i've never had ANYBODY at an indoor range check my guns prior to shooting. If someone started manhandling MY steel I would be greatly concerned.

I do get treated like an idiot no matter if i'm at an indoor or outdoor range. I assume because I'm 21 and have sideburns people think i'm an idiot or something. It never fails that every clerk or RO will tell me to make sure I obey all range commands and to do this and that, even though i've been to these ranges a dozen times. It's frustrating because I own 11 guns and have been shooting since I was 10.

If that had happened to me the manager would have been called over immediately and the situation would have escalated.

Bad customer service is always dealt with by me immediately.

Yeah, I am familiar with the clerk you are talking about. My first experience
at an indoor range was a LAX several weeks ago, and that guy is not
that amicable for sure.

cheers, ab

AHHHH free legal advice....Gotta love it...

You handled yourself far better than I would have..."serious problem" would be an understatement...

I shoot at a members only range...There is a reason for this (me+know-it-alls=UGH!!!)...Yea it costs more, but I dont have to worry about some hammerhead behind the counter watching me like a hawk, thinking I am getting ready to rip off the place OR because I have long hair and Tattoos, I learned all of my "KungFu" from watching John Woo films...Which, yea I did, but dont tell anyone :neener: ...at the members only range I just have to worry about "RANGE NINJAS"...But they are fun to annoy, so it works out in my favor...

BTW since we have discussed BHP's...is $319.00 a good deal on an Argentine HP? HAS a GREAT bore, but the finish looks like someone went after it with a sandblaster....<Evita on><~~~DONT CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA...ITS TRUE I NEVER LEFT YOU...<evita singing off>

The CHIMERA is coming...

There's no reason for a range idiot to ever look in your bag - I know no one's ever done that to me. They don't check guns or anything - the only time they wanted to check something it was at The Gun Store when I told them I was using reloads. They have a FMJ-only rule so I pulled out a box and removed a round to show them. Man, the thought of someone rummaging through my bag makes me mad, without the rest of the stuff he did!

It sounds quite perculiar to me that they are rooting around in you bag. Is this store policy? I know my forehead would be mighty narrow as my eyebrows elevated if they treated me like that.:scrutiny: Sorry you have to deal with guys like that.

Thats a crappy deal., considering the price you would pay for a real one...(hint ya need a few more $$ though and I will set ya up)

Hmm so do i yet i had the same troubling experience. a guy grabbed my gun without permission and decided to give a lecture on how to shoot. this at a members only range. a call to the president is in line now if he would just answer the phone.

Thats just plain weird.

I have had range employees want to see what i was shooting before. I can understand that if i'm someone they havent seen before that they may want to check out my equipment as a means of sizing me up and i can accept that. But, NOONE starts fiddling with another persons gun without permission. Thats just rude and stupid.

T'were it MY HP he dry fired, he'd be paying me for HIS new HP... or he'd be bleeding out of a few orifices when I was done... there is NO excuse for his behavior, and the management there needs to know about it!

I get the "looks" and the jerks all the time. I'm black and whenever I go shooting at the range with my dad (I'm only 16), the Good 'Ol Boys always seem think that we are thugs or gangsters even before we begin to shoot. The RO always seem to be lingering around us as if we have no idea what we are doing. But most of that begins to change when shots start hitting the X ring

Just for the record dry firing does not harm most guns.

I would never assume that I could dry fire another person's gun. If I feel like dry firing a buddies gun I always ask. That is just common courtesy. Too bad this guy doesn't know anything about manners.

I've never gotten grief at LAX Range

Was the counter-guy there a usual one, or a newbie?

Dan and Dave have always been cool with me. I've encountered a couple others, but, aside from the "Not knowing me" stuff and the "Chick" thing, I never had a problem...

RE:

WTFO???? This is nuts....First off no one but me rummages around in my range bag....second, NO ONE touches my guns, (unless invited to do so), third, Dry firing, though doing no harm is something you must always ask to do....I even do it (ask permission to dry fire) when I'm shopping for handguns. You shoulda made alot of noise and had the manager immediately...:cuss:

I worked on two ranges and a gunshop - had I pulled a stunt like that, I would have been unemployed in a matter of moments. We NEVER handled customer weapons without thier express approval and wishes, and handling outside of the range area itself was/is strongly discouraged. Dry firing someone elses' weapon without permission is like test driving thier car without permission.

The clerk opens my bag and rifles through it.
Unless the clerk had explicitly asked for - and received - my permission first, he would have DEEPLY regretted doing this.

Of all the ranges I've gone to, in several states, I've NEVER heard of such a thing.

called the range today

Called the Range and spoke with the manager. Explained the situation. He explained that from time to time they will ask to check and clear a weapon to make sure it's empty if they don't know the customer and will frequently ask to check the ammo (no lead). I replied that I understood that and agreed, however I thought it was inappropriate for his staff to go through a customers bag and to dry fire someones weapon without permission. He agreed and said that he would speak with his employee about it.

If I'm going to spend a day shooting, I'll go to the outdoor Angeles Range. LAX, however, is nice and close (10 minute drive) for a hour or two. I hope this clears up the issue. I guess I'll know next time I go in.

"Everytime I see a HP with the mag safety removed I know I am in the presence of an experienced HP owner."

I've always bought my HP's used. What's a mag safety? None of mine ever had anything like that. Just the thumb safety like on a 1911A1.

Magazine disconnect safety--which means you can't make it go bang if you pull the mag before you pull the trigger. Removing it is a simple business and will actually improve the trigger.
