I was in Sportsmans Warehouse today getting my new compound bow worked on and while the Archery guy was working on it I wandered over the the gun counter. There were 2 employees there and just one guy at the counter who was filling out his background check form. So I asked the free attendent if I could compare the "fit and feel" of the Springfield XD's in both the 3in Subcompact and the 4in model. He said no problem and handed me the 4in model I looked at it tried the slide a few times and then handed it back to him and asked him for the 3in Subcompact and he handed me ANOTHER 4in but this time in two-tone instead of black. I told him that he had already handed me the 4in model I wanted to see the 3in. His response was "Son, this is the 3in model I have been selling guns for longer than you have been alive. So I picked up the other 4in which was still on the counter and put one on top of the other flat so show him that they were the same length. He said, dont do that your going to scratch my guns.

I realize now I should always be extra careful with guns I dont own but I still think his reaction was way overbearing.

Do other young shooters run into this issue?

Is it wrong of me to still buy from this place since its close by even though they treated me like crap.

If by some chance you find a gun shop that doesnt have at least one jerk, or goober, or "ex Green Beret" let us know. I am in my early 30's and still recieve the same treatment I did when I was in my early 20's. Buy from them if they have what you want at the right price. Good gun dealers are rare (and most of them are a lot less knowledgeable than you would think).

No, never buy from a Store if they treat like that.
Some people think they now everything, but customers always have the right, if they want your business they have earn it. Its your money, you dont have to say thank you where you put your $$$$

in his defense, but I could be so very wrong but....he has probably been handing guns to people all day long for who knows how long and got mixed up, then when you were right he didn't know how to handle being both wrong and all knowing gun store guy/god. ;)

I've found at least one moron with ego inflation
"working" in each of the following types of businesses:

* gun
* grocery
* restaurant
* college
* auto
* bar
* police
* government
* home improvement
* dentist
* physician
* fast food
* sports
* quick stop
* auto repair
* bike shop

There are others,
but you get my drift.

My strategy?
Once I encounter the morons,
they are tagged.

I steadfastly refuse to engage with them.

I identify the intelligent employees,
and when entering the store,
am willing to wait to interact with them.
I refuse (tactfully but firmly)
to interact with the morons.

"May I help you?"

"No, thanks. I'm waiting to speak to X."

With time, natural selection will deal with the morons.

Just say no.

If you really want to get frustrated, try shopping for a rifle in Dick's sporting goods stores. Even if you can find a clerk, which is doubtful, he wont know anything. I totally avoid those stores now.

I can run circles around Napa, Autozone and the like. When I go to buy parts they still act like I know nothing. I explain to them (you are certified to sell parts) I am certified to troubleshoot. I have experience in the Army and working on their vehicles, any vehicle that rolled on the ground in a heavy division. If they still have the attitude that they know it all and I am the dumb one and lord it over me I troubleshoot them and nail them to the wall. :fire:

Auto part stores are horrible. I used to work for GM as a mechanic so I know my way around cars a little more then few, not nearly as much as most though. I'll go in and ask for a part

"What's the problem"

"Well it could be this or this or this, you should get these while you're at it just in case"

"allready tested those and troublshot that"

"How did you know what to look for?"

Show them my ASE certification

"Oh... Have a nice day"

complain

I once complained to somone i thought was managment through E-mail about a counter person being a nasty jerk at a warhouse gun store in NJ and the person who got the mail turned around and gave the complaint to the jerk i was complaining about and he e-mailed me back asking what the problem was. How can i buy from them now ? that's what i call good managment but then again they can't even keep track of there inventory

delta - you can - but why would you want to?

That's not good management. Good management would not put you on the spot like that.

Way back in the day, I was an auto mechanic for Oldsmobile. I could tell a 1/2 bolt from 9/16ths from a 3/8, standard thread from fine, etc. just by looking at them.
I was doing some work on a friends car, and needed a bolt. I went to some auto parts place and asked the guy for a 9/16 by 2 inch standard thread bolt. The guy goes to the bin and pulls one out and sets it on the counter.
I said, "That's a 1/2 inch not a 9/16ths."
He gives me the stare.
I said, "I need a 9/16 not a 1/2 inch"
He said,"It came from the 9/16ths bin, it's a 9/16ths."
10 minutes of this going back and forth, he finally goes over an pulls another bolt out that IS a 9/16ths.
I showed him the difference, and then held my tongue.
I always figure that everybody has a bad day and since I suffer idiots so poorly, he was really not doing anything that I wouldn't possibly have done in his place.
Course, I often forget to be so forgiving:uhoh:

His sin was not the mistake of handing you another 4" model, it was being a jerk about being called on it and corrected. I learned long ago: "The customer is not always right; but the customer is always the customer."

With time, natural selection will deal with the morons.
Correct, although in this application we call it the "free market." ;)

.

Sportsmans Warehouse

Could be the first problem.

Idiots can be found anywhere, but in my experience places such as this
tend to draw a larger population of them.

My experience with Sportsman's Warehouse has been universally bad. Prices higher than other local dealers, and doophuses (doophi?:confused: ) behind the counter.:(

SW?

I posted a long story last year about Sportsman's Warehouse. I short of it is, I will NEVER do business with them again. The mid-level manager and salesman I dealt with were both jerks. They both told me my "problem" was corporate policy.

Oh well, I'll shop at mom and pop gun shops until there are no more.

He’s been selling guns longer than you’ve been alive and he’s working at the outdoorsy version of WalMart? Yeah, he’s going places!

When I was active duty AF I worked for a while in the jet engine Test Cell. I was laying in the fan cowl working on something and asked the newbie for a 9/16th wrench. She brought it to me and it didn’t fit, so I told her to get me a 10/16th instead. Then I took a nap while she dug around the tool boxes for one.

When I went to buy my first rifle, I honestly didn't know what I was doing... And neither did the clerk.

Me: Yeah, I'm looking for something kinda cheap, but more kick than a .22
Him: Here, check this out. (Hands me something chambered in .308)
Me: This looks nice and all, but its $800. Do you have anything less expensive?
Him: Sure, try this one out. (Hands me a .22)
Me: Umm.. I was looking for something with more kick than a .22.
Him: (Hands me AR-15) Hows this look?
Me: This is way to expensive, I don't have that much money. I'm looking for something kinda cheap, but more kick than a .22.
Him: (Finally hands me a mosin-nagant m44)

I bought the damn thing too... at $130:(

My experiences with Sportsmans Warehouse have always been very good. When I was shopping for and purchasing my Glock 22 all of the people behind the counter were very helpful and polite.

I told him that he had already handed me the 4in model I wanted to see the 3in. His response was "Son, this is the 3in model I have been selling guns for longer than you have been alive.

"Oh. Well then can I see the 2in model?" :p

You should write or call the management and ask them politely to buy that guy a tape measure. I wonder how many sales he's cost them. I haven't been to the SW in Portland yet. I'll have to stop by when I need a laugh.

I just picked up my subcompact XD the other night at Gander mountain. The two guys were kind of indifferent to me until after the Feds said I was OK then it was all shaking hands and BSing.

I imagine they probably get more than their fair share of nogoodnicks.

Unfortunately retail does not get the best help, I shop the local stores, they kinda know who I am and their a little friendler ( you want a cup of coffee Tom, and have a chair ) and it nice to be with fellow gun geeks , IMHO.

ok well this has happened to me many many times... but this one just pisses me off...
it was about a week or two ago and i was taking my co workers son to go shooting.. he had his gun, s&w polo on, and a range bag... as we finish shooting we walk out into the store part of the range and he wants to look at some guns... i was like sure so we walk over a man about 65ish and he asks to look at a kahr p9 and the guy is like " you dont play with guns" we both looked at him in amazement, so i ask to see it so i can pass it to him, he was like minors arent allowed to handle firearms again the stare we just have gave him, in my mind im like woah is this guy insane? looking at him decked out with gun bags and etc. and looks pro and he still wont let him see it? this time kyle (kid i took) speaks up and hes like i dont play with guns i shoot them this makes this guy all pissy, we go over to the owner (i know him) and told him what was going on and he flipped out i heard him say treat another customer like that again and your gone after that we finally get to see the gun lol the guy was glaring at us :neener:
