I've gathered from posts here at THR that there are a few Mosin Nagant owners, so mebbe one of you can answer a puzzle I ran in to.

Long story, short.... I shot up the last and only 2 boxes I had. They were Seller and Bellot 180 gr. hunting ammo. This was the only kind I've ever ran through my MN. My bro-in-law was going to a gun show so I asked him to pick me up a box. He did. When I opened the box (Norma brand, 180 grain, soft point) I found that the box was a mixed bag. There were 8 that fit the package labeling. The other 12 have longer bullets (I'd guess 200 gr. ? or more) that are FMJ's and the tips are painted yellow.

Does anyone here know what type of ammo this is? The 8 Norma's have "Norma 7.62 RUSS" stamped on the end. The unknowns have "10" and "55" stamped on them.

Thanks.

Looks like you've got yourself some Bulgarian surplus 185 gr. heavy ball ammunition. The codes 10 and 55 on the brass with the yellow-tipped bullet leads me to believe this almost without a doubt.

Definitely check out 7.62x54r.net's ammunition evaluations. It's a great way to identify ammo if you should ever come across something you're not familiar with.

Thanks for the input. That is what it is. The pic is a dead match. Bulgarian ammo mixed in the box of hunting ammo.

Yeah, I got ripped.

I bought that other hunting ammo 2 years ago for $15 / box. That same seller had crates of military suplus wrapped in paper for $5 a pack. Wish I'd bought some of that, even though it's no good for hunting.

This box cost $25. Bro-in-law said it was the only box of MN ammo at the whole gun show. Guess it's getting scarce.

Yellow tip is bulgarian heavy ball 185gr or so. You can get 300rnds of it for $30! I'd say your bro got ripped. You should get some of this stuff...it shoots great at the range.

I think he went to the wrong gun show, or it's scarce in your neck of the woods.

The dealer was a real jerk and pulled a huge bait-and-switch. The Norma ammo is probably the best commercial stuff ever made. The rest is just heavy-ball machine gun ammo. Okay stuff, but putting it in the Norma box is like taking a bottle of Dom Perignon, pouring out 2/3's of it, and adding some Mad Dog and water. Yeah, you'll still get a buzz, but...

You can get quantity ammo online, commercial and surplus, for very reasonable prices (for you and your experiences).
