Mosin bolt reassembly

Today I partially disassembled the bolt to my Mosin-Nagant. The last time I tried it, I didn't have problems getting it back together. Today though, I can't get the guide bar into the proper groove. The way the thing is shaped, the firing pin, it's like putting a square in a circle. It goes on the right side, correct? It will fit on the bottom, but that's clearly not right.

What am I doing wrong?

Problem solved. I didn't realign everything. It works fine now. Thanks for the advice.

I've accidentally disassembled a Mosin bolt before. It wasn't fun to get it back together. It was still easier than my Mauser bolt, though.

It wasn't too bad today, I just bought the gun and it was covered in cosmoline. The problem I have now is that the firing pin is sticking out maybe about 1/8" of an inch. I know you're supposed to use that tool that came with it but I think it was okay. Does the firing pin always protrude a little bit?

1/8" is significantly over spec and will probably pierce primers. It should be between 0.075" and 0.095".

I use calipers to set mine, since I don't have the 'official' tool to do it.

ya, im surprised you werent peircing the primers during shooting. i cant recall how to adjust it.

The firing pin should touch the shallower (75) of the two center notches in the gauge and not touch the deeper (95) of the two center notches. If necessary, adjust by screwing the firing pin in or out of the cocking knob, always stopping with the index mark aligned.

You turn the screw on the end of the bolt w/ the tool or screwdriver. Make sure you check the height w/ the bolt in what would be the closed position. The two notches on the tool (75 and 95) are for min and max firing pin height.

If you shoot the cheap corrosive ammo in your Mosin it would probably be a good idea get familiar with disassembling your bolt to clean the corrosive salts off. Plenty of discussion around here on that subject. Glad to hear you got it back together.

I haven't shot it yet to those who thought it would pierce the primers. I will not load it until I am at the range because of this. Thanks, I will adjust the bolt using that tool!
