Mosin M44 Front Sight problem

Okay, I'm about to get the best gun deal any guy could get... Freebie.

It is a Mosin Nagant M44 and its front sight post slides loosely from side to side..

Apart from taking a welder to the range once i get it zeroed, is there any way to stiffen that beast up into place?

I'd remove the sight and then clamp the dovetail in a vice and compress it a little to try to tighten it up. Once I had it snug I would take some red Loctite to the range with me and apply it at the time I was sighting it in. It takes quite awhile to set up and cure, so I'd think that you should be able to sight the rifle in and then carefully put it aside until the Loctite sets up.

A friend of mine had to order a new one for his at m44 at one point for the very same reason. Tinkering couldn't fix the original. The online parts stores should have what you need. Just bear in mind that there are two different types of front sights for the m44 - I think a large globe and a small globe.

It needs to be staked.

If you take a punch and place it on the line where the sight meets the base and give it a light whack, it should give it enough friction to be able to adjust until you zero it. Once you have it zeroed, stake the sight in place by doing the same except hitting it fairly hard with a hammer.

Ditto on the staking. Might red-loctite it too, just to be sure.
