Greetings All,

I am now the proud owner of an M44...my first Mosin...Its kinda an oddball, but I am a sucker for hard chrome (though in this case it might be a lesser job), and the stock just drew me in...

Anyway I was curious if anyone can chime in on their experiences with muzzle brakes for this rifle?

It appears this one is to avoid at all costs (several reports of it blowing off):

However this one looks like it might have promise (ie heavier, not being blown off the barrel)?

...actually looking up the website that linked to that picture - it appears this muzzle brake is also crap - it took out the front sight when it blew off....

...So i guess...does anyone know if someone makes a good muzzle brake/compensator for the M44? - Not really a big deal - but something to keep my eye out for (have two rough Type 53s coming my way)

Thanks!,

If you want a compensator/muzzlebrake your best bet is just to thread the muzzle.

By the way, are you sure thats chrome and not just unblued?

You buy a 14x1L die and an aligner and put on a muzzle break, I have a AMD one on of mine, a 91/30, I think there are more effective ones, but she looks purty.

the only advantage the screw on ones have is that they don't permanently modify the gun, so if you want to put one on a collector item, you can take it off

down side, they have a habit of following the bullet down range.

I'd avoid them.

The reason being that using a muzzle brake prevents you from extending the bayonet. M44's will shoot to one side without it extended.

I'm trying to figure why you would need a compensator on a M44, the recoil is not unbearable. Think I would get a correct stock for it or at least a sporter drop-in stock with a decent absorption recoil pad. Not exactly a "sniper system" where you need to stay on target for follow up shots.
Somebody took a lot of time to build up that stock though, does look like someone stripped off the bluing with a chemical. A Frankengun to me, but I prefer my milsurps in correct form.

M44's will shoot to one side without it extended.

that is why the front sight is windage adjustable. You look a little silly at the bench with the bayo extended. lol.

Thank you for everyone chiming in.

Mostly interested in a muzzle brake to make it easier for smaller stature people to have fun with. Though its not that big of a deal breaker - it would probably be better to get some of that "low-recoil" hollow tip ammo...

The rifle is apparently truly hard chromed - Classic arms did a few of them back in 2006/2007 apparently (along with some 91/30s). I figured, since its already been hardchromed (and thus lost any historical value) - the different stock (to me) is a bonus - as is adding muzzle brake....

I want a muzzle device that makes the fireball and kaboom even more impressive.

Get the dies, and cut the thread, and put on a AK muzzle break, you'll get a nice fireball, wish I could get a mini Berret break for my MN, that would be cool.
