i have a m70 from the 60's with no recoil pad this is what i was wanting to compare to

A M44 with steel buttplate and poor ergonomics kicks like strong bool!
I suggest Czech/Polish/Romy 147gr 'light ball' silvertip with a slip-on leather or rubber recoil pad for more Mosin trigger time

The 54R round shouldn't kick as much as it does. Yet when placed in a non-pistol gripped rifle the recoil is exagerrated (sp) quite a bit. Compared to a 30-06 it will be around the same considering the 30-06 is your average type 700 rifle. There shouldn't be a difference large enough for you to tell.

Honestly, I think the 7.62x54R's recoil is greatly exaggerated. As long as you utilize proper form, the recoil is really quite manageable--even off a bench.
That said, I'm going to say that it probably kicks slightly less than a .30-06.

If I'm suffering from a stuffy nose I'll take my M44 out and it will knock the snot right out of me.

An m44 should kick less than your average 30-06. The ballistics back up that statement, and most 30-06 rifles weigh less than a mosin.
The main reasons the recoil might bother you is the steel butt plate, poor ergonomics, and the noise will get to you.

I think the M44 recoil is WAY overrated. Yes, the ergos aren't the greatest, but it's not that bad.
My Savage 110 in .30-06 kicks worse, but it has a plastic stock and is very light.

It's about the same as any other military rifle and round of the era. Remember, military arms were made to be shot by human beings. Put recoil out of your mind and concentrate on form, sight picture, and trigger control.

54R is about the same as a .308 and (a little) less than a 30-06

Mosin N. and recoil are synonymous. You just learn to adjust.
After an Appleseed, my arm was bruised bad, but that was because I was learning new positions (seated) and the rifle kept slipping off when I'd shoot. It is a fun gun!

I shoot my M44 off the bench all the time. I did add a Pachmayer slip on recoil pad which greatly helps.
I'd say it kick more than a 308 just due to the shape of the rifle and the shorter barrel. But it's tolerable. When I start to think it has a recoil I just switch to my Yugo M24/47 and pop off 5-10 rounds of 8mm. Then the M44 suddenly doesn't feel so bad.

The M39 Finnish Mosin is a pleasure to shoot. Only girls think it kicks too hard. That steel buttplate isn't designed for comfort, it's designed to survive many decades without maintenance.
Mine is 65 years old and I could use the stock as a baseball bat.

Not bad at all. My Savage 110 bruises my arm after 20 shots, but I can shoot the T-53 for more like 50 shots before I want to set it down and take a rest.

Well, the huge fireball helps a little too
In terms of simple felt recoil, it's definitely less than most .30-06 rifles I've fired, but you definitely feel that sound concussion.

Don't know whether this helps, but my MN 44 with no pad feels like my brother's Lee Enfield (.303).
From my perspective, for the price of a hotel Coke, 10 rounds in my 44 cost about $1.80. Not bad? This was the common ammo which basic soldiers used to push the Wehrmacht from the Russian front, therefore for these superb rifle and ammo values, when I shoot it with the recoil pad (my previous guns were a .22 and M-1 carbine), it's not bad. Doing so I usually have no visible bruise (don't work out except running), and the M-1 Carbine left me with a visible purple bruise. Does that help? The only cheaper ammo for me is .22.
You might want to make a purchase decision soon, if possible. All of my x54R ammo ( four cans) came from "Sportsmansguide.com", and for the last two days or more their Bulgarian HB 300-round cans were sold out. Have not noticed this before, and followed them once or twice each week since December.
A bit higher at Ammoman, but they are very good people and shipping is included in the price.
This is the recoil of really surprising value, while it lasts. Almost all 8mm Mauser and LE ammo costs too much for me to pursue such a rifle, although Samco now advertises 7 mm Mauser ammo for about $180/1,000 rds., which makes me curious as to why the price is so low.
