Are M44's in general in better condition than the M91/30's? Also, are the M44's more collectible because there were less made, or it doesn't matter as much?

I've sold nearly 100 of them (and I still have more!).

The pre-1942's and HEX receivers have a better exterior finish, but don't necessarily shoot any better.

Laminated stocks are "different", a little prettier (IMHO) the straight wood stocks stocks, but not necessarily any "better".

All that said, I think these rifles are the center fire rifle deal of the decade, if not the century. Where else can you get a powerful, reasonably accurate, historical center fire rifle, 100 rounds of ammo and get change back from your $200?

I bought mine from Classicarms as a "value-priced" rifle in that it had the mag floorplate struck through and force matched, big whoopee, I bought it to shoot not collect. This said, 96 bucks delivered me (with my C&R) a 1942 Tula round reciever 91/30 and all the pretty accessories. The bore was pristine, no counterbore on it, finish was decent, was marked refurbed and had a TGI import mark. I stoned some sharp edges down on the sear but haven't done much else, floating and corking the barrel is next as well as trigger work. Can't say that this 42 wasn't accurate enough to see service, this was my five rounds today shooting at a 5"x5" mild steel plate, 1/4" thick, 50 yards open sights, 147gr Russian surplus ammo. You'll notice the one required flyer that you get with surplus, lol... I do have to say I was impressed with the powdercoat staying on so well being hit with five high-speed 7.62 rounds, though, that is some tough stuff~!
