I'm thinking about picking up my first Mosin. I am leaning towards an M44 carbine. I like how the bayonet is attached to the M44. Would that be a good choice or should I pick up the 1891/30 for less than half the price?

The bayonet looks neat and is kind of fun at first. But after about 1 bayonet charge out to check groups, it becomes rather pointless. (Some people do use it as a stand, however.) The 91/30 is what I started with, but sold it after I got a Model 38. If I was starting over, I'd look at a M38 or a 91/59. They're carbine length without the bayo. The 91/59 has a rep for being fairly accurate, but I don't have first hand knowledge. My M38 outshot my 91/30, but YMMV of course.

Basically, they're all fun, get what calls your name.

I would pick up the 91/30. I have never held a m44 with a bayonet on it but when I have the bayonet on my 91/30 it throughs the balance off. Personally I like the 91/30 because of barrel length. My guess is that it’s also more accurate than the m44.

Thanks guys. This is a tough decision. I'm worried the m44's will be difficult to find in the future. I've heard the price has already increased on these.
I will probably end up with both varieties eventually.

M44 is very cool, however bayonet affects POI. Sights are regulated for when bayonet is in "assault" position. POI can change as much as 12" or more at 100M between the two positions. If you want the shorter carbine length Mosin try to find a M38.

If you like the M44, get one. There will be 91/30's available for quite some time. The M44 won't do anything the 91/30 can't, but they're cool just the same. If you're patient, you should be able to find a M44 for about $150 or you can grab one easily for $200.

By 'em all :D

That was the only solution I found, M-39's, M-28, M28/30, M-27, M-24, M-44, M-38, M91/30's, M91's........wishing for an 07 carbine, an Ulanni M-27 Carbine, an unalter'd Dragoon, an unalter'd first modle 91', a 28/76, all the different sniper modles........and then the variations on the variations, and the different countrys, capture marks, Ohhhhhhh, man, it never ends.......

Welcome to the Hotel Mosin, where you can Check out, but you can never leave.....

I dont care fot the permanately attached bayonet. I own 2 - 91's and a 44 . Im looking for a good 38.

Ammo dependent, my POA/POI shifts about 3"-6" with bayo folded vs bayo extended

(Have a 1954 Romanian M-44. Your Mileage Will vary)

when i got my m38 it cost me about 120, the regular 91/30 where around 90-110, i like the way the m38 shoots, but be warned, shooting a 91/30 is like unchaining a hungry beast, shooting a m38 is like covering yourself in steak sauce before you do it

the m38 is louder and kicks more then a 91/30, but also handle identical to a m44

all in all, if you cant get the m44 for less then 120, it just aint worth it

I recently picked-up a "new" 1942 91/30 with cleaning accessories and bayonet for 79 bucks! It's perfect and you really can't go wrong for 79 bucks!:p

Are the m44's going to dry up any time soon?
I heard some people cannot get the bayonet attached on the 91/30's or they don't fit right.
Thanks for all the comments.

The bayonet for the 91/30 is made to fit extremely tight. The intention was that these be firmly mounted and not removed unless absolutely necessary. The one I received is very tight and mounts fine, but requires a few taps with a brass hammer to dismount from the muzzle.

The 91/30 will outshoot the 44. The 44 has way too much muzzle flash. I have a sniper in a 91/30 and a standard 91/30 and a 44. If you can find some russian "silver stripe" ammo you need to get it. This stuff shoots great out of the 91/30. I handload for the sniper with nosler ballistic tips and sierra 168 gr mtch. Gun will surprise you. I have A Steel chicken silouette type target set at 350 yards. My son (X marine)can ring the steel 3 out of 5 shots with standard 91/30 and iron sites. 44 groups about 6 inches at 100yards. If you can find a decent 91/30 Hex receiver get it.

After you buy a M44 you might as well pick up a 91/30 cause they're so cheap... I love the giant fire ball everytime I shoot my Izhevsk Soviet M44...:D

M44 is LOUD, the recoil is harsh, and it will bark flames like a hell hound... Whats not to love? :D

I have 2 M44s and 2 M91-30s. The M44s are fun to shoot, but the accuracy is severely lacking in both rifles. The M91-30s are both very accurate and seem to fit together better. IMO, the M44s are a range toy, but the M91-30s can easily cross over for sporting uses.

It may be possible that I have bad M-44s and good M91-30s, but it seems to be a trend with others too. YMMV.

People will turn to look when you pull the trigger of an M-44. It is dramatic!

I'm surprised at the prices you guys are finding your mosins, I thought $140 for my 1927 dragoon converted to m91-30 "Nika" was a good deal. Not too accurate, but then again I didn't sight it yet, first gun

Thanks guys. Would it be a bad idea to order an m44 online if you pay extra for hand picked? I'm not sure if I could find an m44 in a store around here.
