I will probably end up with both varieties eventually.
I hate to break it to you, but there are far more than two varieties of Mosin-Nagant. There are dozens and dozens. So your choice is even more difficult than you think!
I would suggest you forget about the Soviets for now, there are a ton of them, and grab up a nice Finnish M39 or late model M91 while they're still available for under $500. One of these days some DiCaprio is going to play Simo Hayha and the chance will be gone forever.
Just respect it, don't cut it up, and by all means shoot it early and often. The M39's in particular are a rifleman's rifle. Made for long range sessions and practice in the stances.
As far as the carbines, grab up a Polish M44 if you can still find one. Very accurate rifles.
