Mosin Nagant handgrip question

The cutout handgrips on my Mosin seem to very uneven, one ends about an inch before the other, is there a reason for this?

And what purpose does the cross bolt serve?

If you grip it with your left hand in that spot, you'll see that your thumb is about an inch forward of your fingers on the other side of the gun...and falls right where that groove is.

The crossbolt, as far as I know, is only to reinforce the stock.
