A few years ago, I tried to find usable clips for Betty's M44. A couple of people graciously mailed me clips. They worked, unfortunately, no better than the ones I bought myself -- the rounds would either stick of fall off by themselves.

Has anyone found a source of Russian or other Mosin-Nagant stripper clips that work? I am despairing of finding any and beginning to consider modifying SMLE clips till they fit (which would be a cludge even if I succeed). Please advise -- I would really like to get at least a dozen for use with my two Finnish M91s.

Unfortunately, I've never seen a Mosin Nagant clip that seemed to work well.

From what I've seen, MN clips rely on tension along the whole length of the side walls to hold the rounds in - so when they hold securely, the rounds are tight to get out. Enfield clips, OTOH, have bent tabs at each end to hold the rounds in place while requiring only a minimum of force to strip the rounds out. Perhaps it would be possible to alter a MN clip by making a horizontal short cut at each end and forming similar tabs to hold the rounds in like an Enfield clip? That would probably work better than modifying an Enfield clip to use 7.62x54R.

You can really load the cartrigdes any way you like. If you press down on the bullet of the top cartridge of a clip held vertically the rims will orient properly with a little jiggling.

The only clips that work are Russian surplus ones. Everything else is junk. The rim channels are not deep enough and bends aren't sharp enough.

So where would I get surplus clips? I find it hard to beleive that none of the M-N users (USSR, Finland, China, Eastern Comblock) found a solution that works.

I found some black strippers attached to Czech silver-tip ammo in cardboard boxes of 15 that work very well. Unfortunately, the shop that sold them has no more. I guard those three strips zealously

clips

I have many different kinds of mosin stripper clips. The only ones that work reliably are the Izhevsk marked ones (triangle with an arrow inside). The brass ones and tapco ones are simply junk. I found my Izhevsk ones at gunshows and in a case of ammo. I still see Izhevsk ones at gunshows at about $2 a piece. Last year I found a ton of them at a Wichita show for 50 cents each. Unfortunately, I only picked up 10 of them. I should have gotten them all and played Santa Claus. :banghead:

Oleg,

The clips I sent you were straight out of a 1961-vintage Soviet spam can of 7.62x54R. If they didn't work, I'd be surprised if you're able to find any that do.

OTH, if you do work easily, let me know where you find them! :)

Brass ones

I was able to find some brass ones at a gun show. They work just fine. I'm told the brass ones came off a lot of Chinese 7.62x54r that came into the country as much as 20 years ago.

Mosin Strippers

My input (for whatever its worth at 2:30am  ) is as follows:
There are two kinds of mosin strippers; those that work, and those that don't.
I've gone through all of my clips with my M39 and the only clips it likes are the ones with bent edges. Not curved edges, not 'almost bent', we are talking 90 degree right angles here. Observe...

The stripper on the left has the correct angle. For some reason, the clip on the right, with its curved edges, will slip down through the cartridge-interruptor and jam itself more horribly than an M4gery. :neener:
This is just what I've noticed with my equipment, do with it as you will....

I have one that works so-so with my M38, but it won't reliably hold the cartridges in. A guy on another forum stated he had some he was willing to let me have....that was about 2 months ago, so I ain't holding my breath. I wish Wolf would grab a clue, and see if the original clip stamper is buried in Ishevsk somewhere....

I have personally never seen a genuine early-20th-century Mosin stripper clip. The tool clips sold as Mosin stripper clips (some of which work halfway decent, and some of which don't) aren't actually reproductions of the real thing, just tool clips that happen to more or less fit the stripper clip slot in a Mosin.

I have seen photos of a real M-N clip in the article "Arming Ivan, part I" that appeared in Guns magazine a few months ago. It looks much different than anything I've seen sold.

There seems to be some decent demand for the clips with the good, sharp angles. Someone with access to appropriate equipment ought to crank some out and put them up for sale! What kind of equipment would be necessary for something like that?

I wouldn't think it would be hard to make a jig for stamping these clips...

If I still had regular access to my tooling I would try my hand at it.
