I am looking at picking up a 91/30. I am also mulling over the 5 gun walmart sentry safe (budget is a HUGE issue). Will it fit? Mosin is 48 inches, safe internal height is 53 1/2 inches, but has a shelf. Is the shelf removable? Adjustable? I used a ruler and the pic on the website to do some calculations, and the gun space seems about 4 inches too short, but the next safe up is about double the price.

Thoughts? (I can't afford a $400 safe).

The whole point is to have an RSC (even if a crappy one).

PRK liability, kids around the residence, more than one long gun, and all that.

Bury it maybe? Then just dig it up when you wanna shoot it?

IIRC a 91/30 was 50 1/4" or something, is that a dragoon?

Dunno, it doesnt say on the site, although you would think it should be. You should just goto wally world and check it out.

Look again

Fireflyfather, I have a similar cabinet. Mine has a gap between the shelf and the back of the cabinet. This allows longer guns to fit if you are careful about how you get it in there. Mine actually has a bit of felt-like substance on the back edge of the shelf to protect the barrel.
I have overloaded my 8 gun cabinet with 10 long arms, 3-4 handguns, and the bolts of the overflow milsurps. My 870 Express with 28" barrel fits up behind the shelf, as does the Swedish Mauser. Double checked with my 91-30 and it is snug but doable.
It helps to start with the rifle turned sideways at first until the heel of the stock just clears, then lower and rotate into place. I hope the cabinet you get works like this, they all seem to share some common features. Go ahead and get that Mosin-Nagant but remember that it is a gateway drug for Military surplus rifle junkies. More will come.

PRK wally world doesn't sell safes on-site.

I've handled a few mosins (some guy out at the desert yesterday had a 91/30 with the cosmoline on it...

91/10 is 51", 91/10 dragoon is 48.5", 91/30 is 48.5". . Good to know. That safe is probably too small. GRRRR

Anyone have any actual experience with this gun/safe combo?

Yes, they do. I almost bought one there, but Turner's had the better deal.

And not only can you move the shelf, but I believe the shelf is notched in the back.

Failing that, just get a large hangun safe and toss the bolt in there.

And remember that once you own the safe, you no longer have to buy gunlocks with the weapons, just sign a afidavit that you own a safe.

Most all of the Wal marts I've been into around the country have had everything from the tin safes to the heavy American made ones in stock HOWEVER ya can just simply get a good quality small safe and lock up the bolt as mentioned or the ammo....... ya can't just walk into any store and get 7.62x54 over the counter...... no ammo no boom no bolt no boom

Pork Fat, I had to check to make sure that wasn't MY post--Mine's full of Mosins and a Swede!

Fireflyfather, I have the same safe ($99 on clearance!). It will be full before you know it.

thanks for the info. Unfortunately, the wife (Japanese) is a hoplophobe and the rifle really needs to be in the safe. If nothing else, I can demount the shelf and cut into it a bit to make room. Hell, if it comes to that, I can cut away half the shelf.

As for getting the milsurp bug, not much I can do at this point. Budget sucks so much that that's going to be an itch that I can't scratch no matter how bad it is.

Excuse me, Southern PRK stores do not carry safes. Norcal may.

Edited to add:

DXstorm: Locking up the ammo doesn't absolve you from liability if the weapon is stolen and/or used by a minor. You face criminal charges in CA for a minor using your weapon in a crime, unless it was properly secured (unloaded in an RSC, for example). Don't get me started on that, but it IS the law hereabouts. Plus, I'd like to keep out casual thieves/(other people's)kids screwing around where they shouldn't.

I was in San Diego when I almost bought one at Wally World. It probably varies from store to store just like ammo. But better to support a local store, anyway.

For what it's worth, I got a Sentry 14-gun digi-pad at Turner's for $400 OTD, (The combo lock one was cheaper.) I would check out Turner's, but if that doesn't work, there are gun safe suppliers in SoCal. Just make sure you get a DOJ approved safe for future purchases.

sentry i belive sells a REALLY cheapo sheetmetal 8 gun cabinet that is basically filing cabinet metal for about $100. It is painted green and comes with a little shelf inside. If you don't install the shelf ANY milsurp even SVT-40s with muzzle brakes can fit in there. The "safe" is actually quite good; it holds guns nicely and it isn't easy to break into (you will need a long screwdriver, a pair of sturdy pliers, 10 minutes, and a good bit of determined strength). It is also DOJ approved.

this is not a "safe" that you buy to keep anything that you would sob disconsolately about, but will do the job nicely for surplus guns and such.

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, DO NOT JUST LOCK UP THE BOLTS!!!

You are legally required to keep the GUN locked up. the bolt is not the gun. this is ca law.

ps:
folks will say the $100 'safe' is a POS, but when my house got broken into the burgulars tugged a couple of times at my filing cabinet and gave up right away. everything in it was secure - everything else was stolen or smashed.

OK, as of this month, when I have checked, none of the stores in El Cajon have guns, safes or ammo, and neither two stores in San Diego have guns or gun safes. Ammo selection was also limited at these stores. According to the store employees at three different stores, no WM in cali sell guns or safes anymore. Norcal stores will have safes bought on the WM online store delivered free of charge, but socal stores won't even do that. If you've seen a gun safe (for RIFLES, not file folders) at WM in socal in the last month, please tell me the store location, so I can go back and complain to the manager of the SDC stores.

It's academic at this point anyway, as the safe is ordered.

Silverlance: In order to be CA DOJ compliant, the metal has to be a certain gauge/material. It's at least a little beefier than file cabinet material. The 5 gun safe from walmart was like $147 plus tax and shipping, under $200 OTD. Having said that, similar safes I've looked at recently had a price jump at the end of last year, around$40 or so. Maybe that's the difference between your $100 and this $147 safe.....and 8 vs 5 guns. *shrug*

You are legally required to keep the GUN locked up. the bolt is not the gun. this is ca law.

What's the specific statute on this and what does it say? I thought a California approved cable lock on the rifle was sufficient. So why not stow the bolt in the safe and run a lock through the rifle.

If it is the one with the key lock, I have one of these "safes" (it is proof against children and smash and grab thieves, but not a determined burglar), and I have my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 in it. The shelf is removable.

I picked it up because the Wal-Mart that was selling it had discounted it to a completely silly amount of money...they were getting rid of their gun stuff (sigh), and wanted to move the safes as well. This one was the display model, had a ding in it (the horror!) and went for less than I paid for the Mosin. I got it to put in the garage...temporary storage of long guns away from the curious fingers of children, without having to run the whole way to the basement.

here's a pic of my sentry 14 gun safe (doesn't actually hold 14) and my stack on (not sentry sorry) cabinet. The cabinet IS doj approved. get it at turners or from where i got it from, www.deansafe.com

i live by their store so i just went and picked it up. it was $120 OTD.

i love the thing. keeps kids nosy people and smash and grabbers out, which is all i expect it to do. the other security measures take care of the rest.

Yes, my 91/30 fits in my WalMart Sentry RSC just fine with the internal shelf removed. It does not fit with the shelf installed. The shelf will just slide out, as it's only sitting on four pegs. :D

A quick update:

The safe arrived in 3 days (they made it sound like 2 weeks with a phone call to arrange delivery time...) with no warning.

Inside the safe is crude, and utilitarian. The key looks like something out of a russian gulag or the tower of london (huge), but it works well enough, provided it is on a perfectly level surface (door is fitted in place...the hinges are not pinned). The shelf is only half as deep as the safe, therefore there is a gap in the back sufficient for long rifles, but the shelf itself is so narrow its usefulness is limited.

All in all, if all you need is a cheap, bare minimum for PRK DOJ requirements, this should do the job. At less than $200 delivered, it's enough to deter casual thieves and stupid kids.

The shelf is completely useless. I'm not really sure why they bothered.
