I saw a thread where if someone had 400 what would they buy and the most common rifle said was the Mosin Nagant. Now I know this was used in Top Shots last year but I am just curious as to why it is so popular. The caliber it shoots is rather rare (or not in most of my stores) so you would prolly have to reload for it. Just wondering cause at the price they can be bought at I would get one if some of you recommend it.

TEACH ME!!:)

THe FInn M 39 is on that price range now in unissued condition. Really nice and known for accuracy . THe barrels the FInn used are a bit thicker and measures 27 inch long. They shoot well with bullets ranging in 180 gr to 203 gr 7.62 x 54 R.

check with gunsnammo.com

The 7.62x54R is actually very easy to find and inexpensive. There are vast warehouses still full of surplus, and a lot of places make current factory produced rounds. S&B, Norma, Lapua, Wolf, and some places in the Balkans all make 54R still.

if you get to have one, make sure the screw in the bottom and top on the rear are screwed in well but dont overtighten too much. The sling band screw should be a little loose and so thus the very front band to freefloat the barrel.
All about this rifle is simple: easy to disassemble, adjusting the front post for windage by unscrewing the side screws one in the right side. The left side slot moves the post right and left.
The trigger generally breaks crisp around 5-6 lbs. ANd accuracy is around 2 inch at 100 yds or less depending on the shooter and ammo used.

how many other high powered rifles can you buy for 80 bucks, and another 440 rounds of ammo for maybe another $110? i don't own one, but can CERTAINLY see the appeal so many find in them. Even though they aren't my "thing'' I may get one just to add to the collection

I own two, an M91/30 and an M-44. I spent $125 and $150 respectively. I can get ammo in any big box sporting goods store (Cabelas, Gander, etc) for about $15/ box of 20, or a case of 440 for about $100. They are fairly accurate, depending on condition. My 91/30 was manufactured in 1925, arsenal refurbished some years later, put up in a warehouse and never saw the light of day until it was purchased. My M-44 was manufactured in 1953, and based on its condition, would say it saw some action in the '56 Hungarian communist uprising, so there is some history to it.
They are easy to operate, inexpensive to own and fire, and are impossible to kill.
I love my Mosin Nagant rifles, and would buy another in a heartbeat if I got the right deal.

Walk into a local gunshow, and you'll probably find some 7.62x54mmR Eastern European surplus for 6$ per pack of 20.

My Finn M39 B barrel with a scout mounted scope will shoot better than one inch at 100 yards. I have two other Finn 91/30s that will almost shoot as good. This with off the shelf Privi 150 gr sp ammo. You can't get any better than that. What did I pay for these rifles? 150 for the M39, 90 for the 1943 Tikka 91/30, and 70 for the 1937 91/30.....the core of my collection is Finn Mosin Nagants. chris3

Mosin Nagant

Good because:
-Plenty of them out there
-Can be had for cheap (normally under $110)
-Some accuracy potential
-History behind the gun
-Surplus Ammo widely avaliable
-Ability to modify/customize fairly easily
-Surplus ammo is inexpensive

Proud owner of an M44 and a 91/30. The 91/30 is used almost as much as my .22LRs.

You can buy one a can of surplus ammo and still buy a scope and mount. Near equal to the .308 and reasonable accuracy. Better than a SKS or AK and more range. XX covered pretty well.

finn m39

have one put back and should get it this week coming ($250)

remember when sks were $100 and now $300 up

this will happen when the Mosin Nagant
start drying up as well

also Proud owner of 3 M44's and one 91/30 and one finn m39 on the way

Mosins are cool in that once you get one and shoot it a little you see why they are addictive. After your second one you start noticing things like double stamped arsenal marks and you realize that (depending on the year) they were producing them as fast as soldiers were being slaughtered that carried them. Your rifle may have seen combat with multiple soldiers, hard to beat that for history in a firearm!

I suppose if you can't justify it as a practical and fun firearm you could look at all the history and just have it as a collectors item. You could probably find a battle-scared rifle for cheap if you look. I even suppose you could buy one for the wall just cause it was in movies.

Why a Mosin Nagant? Simple.
I bought an M44 for $65 5 years ago.
Bought 1200 rounds of light ball/hard ball/steel core for a total of $120 shipped.
It's a makes a very loud bang, gives you a good shove, and I don't have to worry about damaging the rifle itself no matter what I do to it.
It shoots straight, and does a lot of damage to the target.
It's a cheap, accurate, fun to shoot, high powered rifle.
Can't get much better than that.

I sighted my M 91/59 carbine with Barnaul 203 gr SP last Dec . At 100 yds using sandbag rest, i got a 2 inch group after 3 shots which may not impress most but i was impressed. For a cheap type of ammo, that aint bad for a cheap gun as well.

Mosins are cheap.
VERY rugged.
Powerful.
The ammo is plentiful.
I own two, will probably get another (because they're $60!) and keep a couple of tins of ammo that will keep longer than my grandkids will be alive, just for gits and shiggles. Or a bad day. Who knows?

Is fine Russian rifle, is meant for shoot GERMANS! anim_m91-30.gif

Yeah, I have a couple. Not the finest machinery ever made, but damn nice boomsticks!

They worked to run the krauts out of Stalingrad. Not much more demanding Beta-testing than that! Been around since 1891 - no bugs to work out. Love my M38. Oh, and remember they were sighted in with the bayonet extended. Soviet doctrine called for the bayonet to to be deployed except when riding in a vehicle. Re-zero if you don't shoot with the bayonet ready to go.
