Mosin Nagant.. why?

The Mosin-Nagant is a true to form battle rifle. Reliably, cheap, capable, versatile, as well as a deadly even unloaded. The 7.62x54 rimed cartridge is no 30-06 but is capable of taking large game and men with ease. I can't think of a rifle that has seen more combat testing and one of few rifles that has even fought its self. If I had to guess more recorded sniper kills have been made with them than any other rifle.

On another note there a lot of fun for the collector and a great entry gun to the world. Every one is different and has a story to decode. One is more likely to handle one as a rife than a antique as well. If all that isn't enough to go out and buy one or ten then lets just hope when the zombies come your group is covered.

Has anyone here scoped an M44? I'd really like to do this to one, seems like it would be great fun at 300+ yards. Can shoot steel plates at 200yds with my dads easily.

Cheap and great fun, what's not to like?

Just got this one for a whopping $75.00! Excellent condition, and shoots stellar. Great trigger, beautiful stock...all for a Mosin that is! I can hit (consistantly) the 500m 10in gong with it off the bags.

BTW a spam can of ammo for 89 clams is not that uncommon.

Exactly! Which is why I finally got one. I shot a buddies carbine, got it from him and since he wanted it back in a trade I bought this one.

It's hard to say no to a rifle that was used (to great effect) against Fascists and Commies*.

have to agree with all of the posts above

The #1 answer: They are economical
The # 2 answer: Surplus ammo is cheap -< $5.00 for 20 rounds
The # 3 answer: They are simple and accurate
The #4 answer: They are powerful = ballistics are equivalent to .308 / 30.06

I purchased two for $88.00 each, (that price includes shipping to my door from AIM Surplus this month. I paid about the same for boys crossman air rifle.) One has become a project rifle, i call it the $100.00 big game rifle.

Could someone perhaps direct me to the thread that discusses how to tell what you're getting? I'm going to a gunshow soon, and I know that my LGS carries Mosins, and I'm considering getting one. I kinda want a Finn, I hear that's the one to have. How do you tell?

Ever since I was a lil guy I always wanted a nagant. Last year my friend and I each bought a m91/30 at a local gun store for $99. I can say with confidence it was the BEST $100 I have ever spent.

Reliable, cheap, deadly accurate, versatile, Surplus steel core ammo for around $100 for 440 rounds, and they are a f'in blast to shoot! That should be enough reasons right there.

I'm a history buff and I highly enjoy owning such a wonderful piece of history. It is safe to say I get off to nagants. I hope to broaden my collection when I get a bigger gun budget.

Passing through Clarkesville TN a few months ago, "TN Gun Country" had a fresh crate with a few 91/30s still covered in cosmo, with bayonets.

Those are very nice guys on their staff, and the store is on the main boulevard about one mile south of a main gate on Ft. Campbell.

Apparently distributors still receive the guns from the Ukraine or Russia.
The prices of 91/30s have Not gone up since I bought some in late '07 at "Classicarms". Some MN 44s arrived at a US distributor, but can't find it. Maybe they already sold out.
Our gun shows sometimes have a very nice Polish or Hungarian 44.

Mine shoots 5 inch groups, 16 inches high 8 inches right.Your supposed to shoot the darn thing with the bayo on. In my opinion its a pike handle, fix a bayonet. Love my Mausers!

Be honest guys, The Ruskie ones do not shoot any where near POA/POI.

I used to look down at the Mosin Nagants...so clunky and seemingly unweildy UNTIL I started doing research on them...now I own three...Russian 91/30...Russian M44 and a Chinese Type 53. The Type 53 is my most accurate with iron sights. If I had known the Chinese model was rare (rates 7 out of 10..10 being the most rare) I never would have cut the bayonet mount off!!!
The M44 was my most recent buy and chose it over a Tula model (it's an Izzy) because it's in excellent shape with a bore of .3105", whereas the Tula bore looked like a sewer pipe with the lands almost corroded away. So sad!!!! :banghead:

I didn't mean for my post to sound that negative. Mine has a great trigger, I think the accuracy issue might be he limits of mil-surp ammo. I need a new sight set up. And a set of dies and brass. I did order a Mosin sniper repro dirt cheap. I cant wait to see what the system is capable of. All my friends Mosins also shoot incredibly high at 100 yards. A new rear sight would really help these rifles out.

I bought a M/N 91-30, took it to the range and after shooting it, gave it away to a guy at the range, pure crap... I also have a M44 which I don't especially like either, but will give it a little longer time to check it out... my opinion is that if you want a really decent WW2 style rifle, get a M96, K31, British Enfield, or a 1903 or 1917 ...

The solution to the Mosin shooting hig is a simple one and can be found here:
Mosin Front Sight Modification
This modification basically gives a Mosin a a way to make minute adjustments to the sights. I've done it on to 4 or 5 and it works like a charm!

I respectfully suggest that the 7.62x54R cartridge is indeed in the .30-06 class if you load it yourself. It will achieve 2600 fps with a 174 grain bullet. The .30-06 can do 2800 with a 168 grain bullet, but not in a Garand. With the M-1, the .30-06 should not be loaded to exceed 2600 fps. With 150 grain bullets, some .30-06s can reach 3000 fps, but the M-1 tops out at 2750. The Russian round is good for 2800. Source: Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading, 6th ed., 2003. The 7.62x54R blows away any other .31 caliber round. Oh, and if you load that thing with the 123 grain bullets used in the 7.62x39, it will hit 3100 fps!

My 91/30 will shoot 4-5" groups right where I aim it at 100yds all day long. All you have to do is adjust the front post for windage and rear sight for elevation and it will shoot minute of Nazi all day long.

And you can use it as a spear as well as cook meat on the bayonet and shish kabob!!! :what:

They worked to run the krauts out of Stalingrad. Not much more demanding Beta-testing than that! Been around since 1891 - no bugs to work out. Love my M38. Oh, and remember they were sighted in with the bayonet extended. Soviet doctrine called for the bayonet to to be deployed except when riding in a vehicle. Re-zero if you don't shoot with the bayonet ready to go.
The M38 was the carbine without the bayonet.

The M44 is the carbine with the bayonet. :)
