Hey folks, my first gun of the year is Remington 1917 mosin Sporter. In case some of y'all didn't know, before the US entered the Great War, the Russian empire couldn't make many rifles for their troops. So the Tsar had Rem and Westinghouse to make rifles on Russian machine and under Russian overseers here in the USA.

However, only few went over there before a little revolution happened and the Empire was over for good. Most of these American made rifles ended up in Finland, briefly issued as trainers and issued rifles for the few troops sent to Russia, or sold as surplus.

With that history lesson out of the way. Let's get to my rifle. It's a Sporter rifle, nothing matches on it. I believe it's either a catalog sold rifle, known as " Finn Cubs " or was snagged by a factory worker. Which did happened from I read. The Sporter job is well done. Whoever did it was a professional at it. The bolt has been turned down and the sight replaced with an aluminum or lead sight.

I picked it up under 400 bucks. Which is an alright deal I guess, true I could of found another one in better shape but I've been looking for a sportized mosin to go hunting with for a while.

I might get a bettter stock for it, re blue it and tap it for a vintage wever scope for an old school surplus hunting rifle. Or I might leave as is. I don't know yet. But I'm happy I got a rem mosin!
Also, there's an odd marking on the rifle, which looks like yll that's been underlined, let me know what that means if anyone knows.

I bet that has some wallop. It really trips me out that mosin are running 4 bills now.
I'm dreading the recoil a little with the chopped barrel. For the price, yeah it's insane to think that this gun was probably bought new for 16 or dollars in the 60s or earlier from a catalog.

I had a full length 1891. It was not a soft recoiling machine. I really regret selling it. At the time I paid 100 dollars and you could get them for 75 at a gun show still. But mine was a good example with a cleaning kit thrown in by the old man who sold it to me.

My m44 isn't that bad. Though haven't fired it standing; just from a bench. If that is anything like the M44 be prepared to have everyone make comments on how loud it is

The “yll” is the remains of a Russian marking if I remember correctly. I’d have to see it up close.

But you didn't. You have a sporterized Mosin. Only collectors want or will pay extra for a Remington made Mosin, and they will not pay for one in that condition. Every time I see a travesty like that, I shake my head. Yes I too own a sporterized Mosin-see the concurrent thread on Mosins; but it's a 1938 Tula, which while not a 1942 Ishevsk, is still more common than a Remington Mosin.

And after putting $1000 into a rifle you paid (way too much) $400 for, you'll have a rifle worth @ $200, even in these times.

True, but it's probably the only US made Mosin I'll ever I get for a while until a better condition one pops up, if that happens. So until then, it's better than nothing. As for the collector value,I know there's little there aside from the very few who are interested in Sporters. Which is the only reason I would even remotely modify it, though I probably won't.
