Anyone make them, know of a good set, or is eBay the best bet here? I have a great '31 Izhevsk with a laminate re-arsenal stock ... that I hate. I'm looking for something frankly more attractive, with a great grain - like the Finn stocks. It doesn't have to be the "OEM" birch stocks, but it doesn't appear that ANYONE makes custom stocks for these things, so it looks like a spare birch is my only choice. Since a lot of people are going with the new ATI synthetic stocks, there have been a few stock sets on eBay, but I'm not sure if that's my best route. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I've seen commercial stocks with better figures, but I don't think anybody produced like the Finns except the Finns.

One third mix pine tar, boiled linseed oil, and turpentine. Apply hot to a stripped stock.

You may want to check out

www.rifle-stocks.com I like the Marksman in Walnut on a Finn M-39 it looks nice.

www.boydsgunstocks.com Makes one for a Mosin Nagant www.surplusrifle.com does a build with a model 1944 and one of their stocks.

The ATI just lacks the heart and soul of a good piece of Walnut IMO.

You can always sell off your laminated stock and make up some of the purchase price difference, that or box up and set aside all of the original parts and later restore the rifle to original assuming you don't cut tap or drill on it or alter it beyond restoration.

Best of luck.

Most of the Soviet stocks are either laminated or some sort of rosewood (?). I've never seen any that are very nice. The Finns used birch but the only ones that would fit a 91/30 are so-called "pot belly" stocks made for the late model Finnish versions of the 91/30. Those are hard to find. The M-91's sometimes have very nice wood and the US made ones have black walnut. But these won't fit the 91/30. I'd suggest just keeping an eye open and grabbing one of the cleaner vintage Soviet stocks or an older Dragoon stock. You're never going to get one as nice as the tiger striped M-39's, but that's just the way it is with 91/30's. You need to go get an M-39.
