I've read online that rear stocks are interchangable between the Mossberg 500 and Mossberg Maverick 88, yet the foregrips are not. Does anybody know why this is, and what the differences are? I'd really like to take off the black stock and forearm in favor of a camo set.

im not sure, they should be interchangable. maybe this idea may be a left over from the old days of dual vs single arms?

The Maverick foregrip is permanently rivited to the action tube.
You can install a Mossberg 500 camo stock set to your Maverick but to do so you must also buy a Model 500 action tube and forearm securing nut.
You will want the 7 3/4" action tube and the correct 7 3/4" action tube securing nut, most all of the newer guns do not use the old 6 3/4" long action tube.

Both of these parts are available from Brownells, http://www.brownells.com or from Vic Havlin, http://www,havlinsales.com
Both parts will cost you about $40.00 in addition to the cost of the stock set and the parts are easy to install by anyone with a modicum of mechanical skill.HTH

"The Maverick foregrip is permanently rivited to the action tube."

Not to disagree, but I have seen different. I dressed up a Maverick to resale. It had the threaded tube just like a 500. I ordered a Crown Grade stock set from Mossberg, both bolted right on.

The only difference is the position of the safety. If your tube has a retaining nut that can be unscrewed and two arms, any Mossberg 500 set should mate right up.

I won't argue that point, I have replaced several of the rivited forends with standard action tubes, I am sure other gunsmiths are doing the same and knowing Mossberg they probably have sent Maverick shotguns out the door with conventional forend assemblies, no doubt about it, but the majority of Maverick guns will be found with rivited forends just the same.

Do you think the method in which the foregrip is attached is associated with the style of foregrip?

Most Mavericks have the ribbed combat-styled foregrip, like this:

Mine and a few others I've seen have a more traditional styled foregrip:

I'm out of town at the moment, but when I get back I'll take apart my Mav and see how the grip is attached.

Yeah. I saw the picture in the original post but can't really see what type of attaching method is used.
If there is a double slot nut on the front of the forend then it is screwed on and not riveted.
Just the same, you will want to check the length of the action tube if it is screwed on.
Mossberg might be doing a parts clean-up and are using the older 6 3/4" action tubes on the Maverick guns.
The new action tube is 7 3/4" long and you will need this length to install a camo stock on your gun. HTH

I'm almost sure the foregrip of the Mossberg 500 it's not compatible with the Maverick.
The rear grip is,as in this picture the pistol grip is one for the Mossberg.

I just put a Mossberg black plastic forearm on a Maverick 88. Slid right on, used my Brownell's multiwrench thingie to undo the nut.

It appears that mine has that double slot nut. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to Cabelas tomorrow to get new stocks and some sort of tool to get that nut loosened.

The slots on either side of the nut? If it isn't cranked down you might try a pair of needlenose pliers. It's only a Maverick.

I usually take the action bar/fore end out of the shotgun and use a 12' steel ruler (about 3/32' thick) crosswise in the slots to loosen/tighten the fore end nut.

OK, I bought a Ram-Line stock and foregrip kit. I went to put it on, and the Ram-Line foregrip is much shorter than the original. I look on the instruction sheet, and it says its for "Pre '96" models.

I guess I'm stuck with the plain black stocks, because after searching around online, I cant find anything for "Post '96".

Has anybody had luck with Camoclad kits? I'm kinda leary, I afraid it might start peeling with time.
