I found a mossberg 500 for 175 with pistol grip, and regular butstock with a case for 175. Good deal? It a VERY lightly used gu. I was looking at the maverick 88 new for 160. Which would you go with?

Update: post #15........ purchased an 870. Thanks for your help.

Get the 500. I love mine. well worth the 15 buck difference, even used. It's not likely to wear out EVER, so...

I've got a Mossberg 600Ct that I've had for almost 35 years.
I think it's similar to a 500.
Never had any problems with it

Solid gun, shoots well... reliable.. and tough. I've got a bubba 500 with stock wood (an older one), and a 590A all decked out like a 590A1.

I paid $125 for the wood one.

Easy to service and clean, plenty of mod options, good customer service. Proven platform.

Get it!

You should have been gone buying the 500 instead of home posting the question.

Time it is a waste'n.

I bought a mossberg 500 before i knew ANYTHING about guns at all. I only figured mossbergs were the best and only shotgun to get. (thank you rap music). Few years later i really got into guns and found out the difference between a 500 and a higher end shotgun. My buddies winchester pump makes my pump feel like an 92 yugo.

BUTTTT. It functions everytime and still looks good so i cant complain to much.

Ok.... new option.... Rem 870 magnum 28" bbl, 214 OTD.....? OPTIONS OPTIONS!!!

I had misinformation...... it ended up being a maverick with pistol grip and butstock.

Honestly, while I'm a Mossberg/ Maverick owner, with the pistol grip setup on the Moss 500, you were smart to go with the Rem 870. the top tang safety on the Mossberg is nice, on a regular stock shotgun. The pistol grip stock makes the safety a PITA to operate.

That's a great deal. Not long ago I paid $350 for a new Mossberg 500 w/ pistol grip only and no case. (Granted I traded it for a profit, but that's neither here nor there) You'll enjoy the mossberg, and though they're made by the same company, it's a higher quality gun than the maverick 88. The mossberg is a LOT lighter than the 870 I had.

I've got one of those stocks on my 590 that's a pistol grip and regular butt-stock. Its not a speedster, it's very com comfortable and shootable in either position.

I will also fit a 500.

Eventually with lots of money sunk into it a Mossberg can look like this, a serious home defense weapon. Surefire light and Black Hawk recoil suppression stock - some of you may have seen this before, so I hope you don't mind me sharing it again. My next shotgun will probably be an 870:

My 590 holds 8+1 rounds, has smooth action, a heat shield and a 18 inch barrel, and a 6 round side saddle, and a pistol grip/regular buttstock combo.. for $365.

All I need to do is mount a light on it. Its practical, reliable, and looks cool, shoots well.
I sank way more money into my SAIGA, and still need a few things for it to get it up to "combat specs'....

I have two 500s, good guns. They aren't an 870 though. Don't second think your choice. You choose good. The 870 will feel a little less rattley.
