how do you guys feel about the maverick 88? how does that compare to the mossberg 500? ive seen the 88 for about 180 (w/o pistol grip) and the 500 for 235, with heatsheild and pistol grip.

can anyone point me in the direction of where i can buy one, with a pistol grip perferably? ive been to gunbroker and whatknot. try to do this post without too much debate ;)

thanks for the help on my posts

well the Maverick IS a Mossberg. same design, similar materials. i believe one only differance is the location of the safety. tang on a 500. trigger gaurd on the Mavericks. barrels, withing gauge and capacity, are interchangable. as are most things such as pistol grips, stocks, ect.

id suggest you get a Maverick and then just purchase an aftermarket pistol grip if a pistol grip what your going for.

Hoppy590 has it nailed...Maverick Arms is entirely "Owned & Operated" by Mossberg. Most obvious difference is the saftey location.

My HomeLand Security shotgun is a 1990 vintage Maverick 88. Started out as regular hunting gun, 28" modified Choke plain barrel. It now sports the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore plain barrel. Stored under my side of the bed, "Cruiser Ready" with #4Buck, and 5 slugs in a butt cuff.

Kis2, you don't have your location in your posts, but most of the 'big box chain' sporting goods stores have Mavericks for sale...Dick's, Dunhams, the Big 5 chain out west.

Dunhams has 2 locations in South Dakota...Watertown and Yankton. Don't know if either of those cities is within a reasonable drive for you, but worth a look/phone call if so.

Dunham's here in Ohio frequently has both the Mavericks and Mossbergs on sale, sometimes with 2-barrel "combo" packages...a 28" modified or swapable choke barrel, and a shorter (20" or so) rifle-sight or even a plain (bead only) barrel

i am fortunate enough to have a cabelas not far away... other than that, (which i have not checked yet) ive not seen any home defense style shotguns in any retail places, one sales guy told me their chain can only carry hunting style, not special purpose mossbergs
thanks for your help guys

kis2,like I posted in your other thread if you want the least expensive HD shotgun get a Maverick. If you want to add accessories, like you said you might,go for the Mossberg 500 or an 870.YMMV.tom.

A compadre of mine has one and likes it, but isn't quick to show it off. It is a Mossberg, so it works. But its not exactly the sexiest thing in the world. It's looser than a Mossberg 500 and technically considered a lower model in the scheme of things, but he has never had a problem with it.

If you want to go for as cheap but workable as possible, the 88 is a decent choice. But only recently have accessories for it begun to surface. I'm not sure what still is not available. My buddy wanted to trick his out, but couldn't find anything that would fit it!

Personally, I'd take the 500 because they work, too and you can find accessories for them easier. I've owned a 500 and loved it, but now that I've got Remington I can't go back..

Good luck.
