I recently purchased a 500 from a private party. The gun was made in 1997 but looks to be in great shape. I have taken it to the range 4 or 5 times now with no issues until now. During my last session I had several FTF. The shells showed what in my opinion was a light strike on the primer. I put them back in the gun and racked the slide hard and they fired. I doubt this is an ammo issue since they did fire the second time.

Any ideas on what the problem could be would be appreciated. Unfortunately I failed to examine the strike on the primers of shells that fired OK first time through.

You have made sure the barrel is tight right? If so break it down and completely clean the bolt sometimes gunk will build up in the firing pin channel. Last resort would be to replace the spring.

Gentlemen thank you for the replies. Yes I am left handed?? The ammo used was the same I had been using, Fiocchi slugs. I'll check the bolt but it has been cleaned, less than 50 rounds fired since. I'm really interested in why Andrew asked if I was left handed??

I can't speak for him, but it's probably because left handed shooters tend to bump the action release lever when reaching for the trigger. If it gets pressed enough it will unlock the action and let the bolt unlock and retract slightly, resulting in a light primer strike or worse.
