Gents:

I have a standard Mossberg 500 with a five shell magazine tube. I'd like to extend it. I have an 18.5 inch barrel.

What do I have to do? Do I move to a 20 inch barrel and obtain a tube extender? Maybe I can remove that piece on the barrel that locks onto the magazine tube and then just get one of those barrel/tube clamps?

What are your suggestions? Thanks!

The magazine tube is screwed into the receiver.

You can not extend the 5 shot tube , you have to replace the tube with the longer version. You also have to replace the barrel to match the longer tube.

Not just the barrel length, but the barrel with the retaining extension located further out toward the muzzle .

You'd be better off just trading it for a version with a longer magazine tube -- that is, if you wanted to stick with the Mossberg design at all. The fixed-length, closed-end magazine tube is one of the drawbacks of the Mossberg design, and is one reason why some people choose things like the Remington 870.

Yeah, I see that Brownells sells an extension kit. It includes a 20 inch barrell, an extended tube and spring. $150 on back order. The nice thing is that the barrell comes with a front and rear rifle sight. I thought about installing a sight package on my 18.5 barrel, for longer slug shots. Maybe I'm making too much about the extra two rounds I'd get with an extension. I'm starting to think that 6 shells are sufficient.

It would be a bad idea to remove the lug and use only the barrel clamp. First shot and the barrel goes flying downrange, at best.

The tube and barrel would need to be replaced. The cost of which is half the cost of buying a factory new 8 shot 500.

You have to get a new tube and a new barrel.

This is a spectacularly bad idea. Don't try it.

I find the 4-5 shot magazine tubes ideal for home defense. They balance well and I can't justify the extra weight for 2 more rounds that makes the gun too muzzle heavy. You may want to try both to find out which is better for you before you make a change. My 2 cents

You can find a good used Mossberg 8 shot for the price of a conversion kit.

The used ones are often sold off by folks who decide a standard 5-shot with 18.5" defense/brush hunting barrel and a 26" vent rib sporting barrel is more versatile.
