I purchased a Mossberg 500 about six months ago and just went to shoot it yesterday.I loaded it and went to push the safety forward and it would not go forward all the way.I then pressed the slide release and attempted to rack the slide and it is jammed solid. This is testing my faith in Mossberg. I have sent them an email and am waiting for a reply. Not that it matters as my confidence has now been shaken and I will probably get it fixed and get rid of it or trade it for a Remington 870.Has anyone else had any problems with the Mossberg 500?

Have had mine for over 20 years with never any real problems. Did you check to make sure the barrel is installed and tightened properly?
Probably no need to send it back to Mossberg as you should be able to remove the barrel and find out whats wrong...the mechanism on the entire gun is quite simple!

Bluehawk has it right, I would just be careful because it probably has a round in the chamber. Even if you THINK it doesn't, do NOT pull the trigger.

The only issue I EVER had with mine sounds like this, and I was under the impression they'd fixed it. What happened to me was that the safety came loose when the plastic button cracked, and the ball bearing that rides in the detent to lock the safety in place came loose and jammed everything up.

We simply took the screw holding the safety out, and that freed up the mechanism to allow the gun to be unloaded. A quick change of the safety button, and it's been running like a Swiss watch for the last 20 years.

Good luck.

PS - It took longer to type this than it did to fix the gun ;)

I wouldn't let it shake your confidence if you can help it. Every model of gun, no matter its reputation, has at least a few examples of malfunction out there. It's just the reality of goods and services. Mossberg makes a quality shotgun, so you might want to give them another chance - yours is probably a fluke.

It is not loaded. The slide never moved a centimeter.I have stripped the gun and the barrel and everything else is in working order. This is an issue related to the safety.Eight hours and still no word from Mossberg.......

The tang safety is a very simple unit and is entirely self-contained on the receiver.

Take out the trigger housing and see if it works.

If it doesn't work, take out the thumb piece screw and see why it doesn't.

Most likely cause is the screw was loose and the little steel detent ball slipped out of place.

If that is the case, put a small drop of Blue Lock-Tight on the screw when you put it back together and it will never happen again.

Why sit and wait for an email, their number is on their website, under parts and service. 800 363 3555

I have the same problem, I just bought a used 500 in rough shape (dinged up, rusty) and I'm refinishing it myself. Everything seemed to be fine but after I had the receiver in the parts washer the safety is very hard to move.

I've called twice in the last week and their customer service has been top notch. I was missing the screws for the tapped receiver and called to get the size. I was on hold maybe one minute when they answered they asked for the serial number and got my information and sent me new ones for free, I didn't even ask.

I called this morning about the safety and didn't have to wait at all, answered on about the second ring. I was told all work on the safety would be free of charge you just have to send it in to them, or take it to a gunsmith and they would cover it. I'm assuming it would have to be one of their approved dealers or something. I thought I could fix it myself which he didn't recommend but told me to try and put some lube on it if all the parts were in correctly.

Don't lose faith in Mossberg just yet, I own two other 500's and have never had a problem at all out of either of them, and from what I've experienced in the last few days their customer service is pretty good.

same thing happened to my son's 500 when I was goofing around with it whilst goose hunting. I dropped out the trigger group, pulled the forend forward, cleared things out, and reassembled. that was 6-7 yrs ago - not one problem since. They are one of the more reliable platforms. Not as good as an 870, but good.

Mossberg does not check their email every day, and certainly isn't checking over the Independence Day weekend. Friday was a federal holiday for pre-retirees. I believe their website warns it might take a month if you are ordering parts by email. Call if you have an urgent problem.

I am an 870 owner but something like that makes me think twice about Mossbergs if I ever am in the market again. :D

Don't be surprised if Mossberg does not tell you how to fix it or even offer an explanation to the problem... it is a CYA(cover your a$$) thing with the manufacturers, we were repeatably warned not to offer any advice to customers... that doesn't mean it didn't happen ... to the nice ones anyway!

They should however at least return your call or e-mail you.

:D

I received the gun back from Mossberg two days ago with no explanation of what the problem was. When I initially talked to them they tried to make me ship it at my own expense.I asked to speak to a supervisor and was sent a prepaid shipping tag.The safety moved freely once the gun was disassembled. I am going to attempt shoot it again this weekend. After this experience I will never buy a Mossberg product again. As a matter of fact I will probably trade the one I have (at a loss) for a Remington 870.Oh well you live and learn.

I'm wondering how many times you stripped that weapon in those six months you had it. Even stripped the trigger group, didn't you? That problem you described is common among the neophytes.

Good for you! Buy a Remington, reassemble it wrong and bad mouth it! Be fair! How much do you want for the Mossy?

I never even removed it from the box except to briefly inspect it, let alone disassemble it.This was a factory defect. Thanks for trying your best to be a totally arrogant ******* though.Who do you think you are?

Gunner, I think you are going to find people on here are pretty skeptical of you when you badmouth Mossberg. I picked up a Maverick and had excellent customer service when I requested a barrel exchange. They take a long time returning e-mails (from my experience and what I've heard), but if you just take the 5 minutes to call them they are very professional and helpful.

Who do you think you are?

Ease off on the caffeine, dude.

I'm the guy who offered to buy your "defective" Mossberg that you seem to want to badmouth so damned much. I'll pay you $100. Hey, it's a defective POS to hear you tell it.

As Smithmax said, yeah, I'm skeptical.

I'll trade you an 870 straight up for your mossberg. I'll even draw you pictures so you can figure out how to work it.

Mossberg 500 Malfunction??

What did you expect?

Just kidding, I'm sure they will take care of you ASAP. Good luck with it. They have a good reputation for a reason.

Oh, FWIW, I have had no malfunctions with my 870.

I have 2 Mossberg 500's, one in 12 ga. and one in 20 ga.. Also have a Mossberg 835. We've never had any problems out of them except with normal wear on little things. They're so easy to take apart and put back together, parts are reasonably priced, and you'll never have to worry about being able to find parts because it probably will never be discontinued.
Personally, I will never buy any other brand besides Mossberg. When you get the problem straightened out, I hope you give it a chance and have as good of an experience as I've had with mine!

Enough of this. Y'all treat each other with some respect, please. At least as long as you're on THR... there's plenty of other boards where you can show your hindmost parts and entertain everyone thereby.
