Hi all,

I recently bought a Mossberg 500 with 18.5" barrel. It came with both a normal stock and a pistol grip, but I replaced the stock with one of those Knoxx SpecOps recoil reducing ones.

It came with a small bead at the end of the barrel, but there are no sights near the trigger end. There are some predrilled holes to receive a sight, but I have no idea what to get.

Can someone recommend a sight kit for this model? It doesn't have to be anything special or expensive...just functional.

Thanks for any suggestions!

First, the bead has a lot going for it as a super fast defensive sight system.

Second, a plain bead mounted on the barrel will be way too low for any adjustable rear sight.

Third, you may do better shooting the thing as is rather than adding aftermarkets sights. These are available from a lot of makers and dealers. Try Williams, Lyman and Brownell.

Of course, you probably would do better with the standard stock, but I'll let you find that out yourselves.

HTH....

I'll second the bead. Nothing will be faster. Instead of spending $75 on a set of iron sights, spend that money on ammo, and you'll be better off.

Iron sights for that gun will cost a lot more than $75.00 since a front sight will have to be soldered onto the barrel. You don't aim a shotgun, you point it. If you really want, get a dot sight and a Weaver mount will attach to the receiver. That's what the holes are for. Then you'll be all set, and very tactical looking, too. :)

The only reason to add something else IMO is if the bead isn't putting your pattern/slugs where they should go.
Mine does with slugs out to about 40 yards without any real trouble.
I'd try it first before you start worrying about something else.
If it ain't broke...

Thebaldguy is right, the Mossberg combat rear sight that go in those screws in the receiver is a nice setup but you have to take the barrel into a gunsmith to cold sweat the front sight on, it covers the bead w/ a ramp and blade, it is a nice and works; the rear sight is adjustable for w & e. My gunsmith 10 yrs ago charged my less than $30 to do it so not too expensive, the sight you can get from Mossberg & is probably around $75 w/o shipping.
You could put a picatinny rail on the receiver and get a red dot like sig226 said, the rail is only $7 at Midwayusa.com. I have an 18.5" bbl w/ fiber optic snap on bead as my home security gun on my hunting mossberg 500a and it patterns where you aim it; no need for any rear sight you just use the centerline of the receiver. How do you like your knoxx stock? is it the full butt or pistol grip? I was thinking of getting one but they cost more than my shotgun did at the time I bought it. Can you post a pic? I have seen new persuaders with the nylon web under the forearm, wish mine had one of those, but then I would look silly w/ that duck hunting I guess.
