I recently purchased a mossberg 500 riot shotgun. I new it wouldn't extract shells, but I thought some new extractors would fix it. I got the new parts and they look like the ones in the gun. I tried them and they didn't help. If anyone has an idea what is wrong I would appreciate some input. Thanks.

Take off the barrel and examine the chamber with a good light. See if there's pitting, rust etc. near the mouth of the chamber, or plastic buildup in the chamber itself. If you see any evidence of these things, give the chamber a thorough cleaning with a new barrel brush wrapped in 4/0 steel wool with a plastic dissolving solvent. Or you could use part of a copper Chore Boy pad or the like set into a split dowel.

With a clean chamber, try a couple different brands of ammo and see if they work better. Sometimes a good cleaning and a switch in ammo brands are all it takes.

It may be that things are so bad you'll need to hone the chamber. A small brake cylinder hone in a low speed eletric drill using ATF as cutting oil might do it. It could be you'll want to leave stuff like this to a gunsmith if you aren't confident honing your own chamber. Remember, it's easier and cheaper to remove metal than it is to put it back. Go slow and get your 'swirlies' right- and confined to the chamber.

Beyond that I have no simple solutions to offer- it's gunsmith time after that as far as I can tell.

Polish the chamber with 00 steel wool wrapped around a bore brush and chucked into your electric drill on low/medium speed with a little bit of lightweight oil for lubrication while polishing.

Also, switch ammo. Try a box or two of Winchester AA or Remington STS target ammo. Makes a BIG difference.

The shells come out of the chamber just fine. The shotgun just won't kick them out. you have to reach in and manually pull them out. I just cant figure it out. It is driving me crazy. I appreciate the input thoe.

Thanks

Aha. That's different.

You said "won't extract."

What you're having is an EJECTION problem, not an extraction problem.

You can see the ejector looking through the ejection port when the bolt is open. It's held in place with a large headed slot screw, and should be easy to replace if needed. Examine your ejector and see if it's intact, and replace it if needed. That should fix it.

ETA- See http://www.nrapublications.org/tar/MossbergShotgun.asp for pics of basic disassembly plus an exploded diagram.
