I've been looking for a 12ga. pump along with a good AK-47, and saw a pretty neat M500A at a pawn shop a couple days ago. It had what looked like what was about 6-7 rd capacity (undertube exended even with the barrel), all-black synth grips, little gold dot front sight, etc...

...for only 190 bucks

should I go back and jump on that before someone else does?

I'm also not very familiar with shotgun prices and deal-searching, or modding. If anyone could give me some good info or post up some info links, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks. (I'm mostly a rifle fan, so my SG knowledge is only limited to the basics)

That's a good price if it is in good condition. If beat up, then it's about normal.

190 is a good price if it is in good shape like 19-3Ben stated. You just need to do a little functionality test. Make sure the firearm is unloaded and the chamber is empty, aim in a safe direction and pull the trigger with the safety on. Firing pin should stay in place as you well know. That is about the only functionality test you can run on a shotgun without loading and firing. The other way to test a mossberg is this. Close the chamber by pushing the pump forward. Now, holding the shotgun in a safe direction and only holding with your trigger hand shake the firearm. If it doesn't rattle its not a mossberg... lol

If it looks in good shape I say buy it. You really can't go wrong with it.

If the magazine tube is flush with the muzzle***, it is most likely the 8-round "Security" version of the Mossberg. If the magazine is a few inches shorter than the barrel, it is the 6-shot version.

Jump on it, quick. Decent buy on a good solid serviceable shotgun.

***Provided it was not "home-shortened" by a hack with a saw...

didnt look hacked or shortened to me. It had some length to it for a shotgun. Guess I'll ride up and see if its still there. I doubt it, though. I liked it alot. It was sleek and had the good-sized underbarrel that I always look for in an SG. Wish I bought it then instead of gamlbing now.

If it isnt there, then how much would one brand-new cost?

i just paid 200 for a brand new Mossberg 500 so id say if its in good condition, i would say yea go back and get it

thats exactly what it was; same look, finish, barrel/underbarrel... Unofortunately, its gone now. Guess I missed a good deal :(

New ones sell in my area for $250. My neighbor got an ANIB example recently for $150.

So $300 would be too high for the 20"/8 shot? It's about $30-40 more than the 6 shot, right?

Here is a pic of my Maverick 88 5+1 shotgun with the 18-1/2" HomeLand Security barrel. Note the mag tube/barrel lug and attatchment screw assembly is about 15" long. Those are PMC brand 2-3/4" slugs. The 8-shot would have a mag tube about 20" long:

Yeah, new 7+1 500As go for $250 to $280 in my area. So $190 for a used one is a reasonable price, as long as it is in good condition.

$300 would be a little high for my neck of the woods. I'd offer cash $275 and see what happens. By comparison, I picked up a NIB 590A, 8+1, with ghost rings for $385.

I've been looking for a 12ga. pump along with a good AK-47

Great minds thing alike ;) :D !

Got the 590A around new years, and the Yugo M70AB1 a few weeks ago:

Both are totally awesome, I am more than satisfied with both purchases. Got the M70AB1 from AIMSurplus.com for less than $450 including shipping and FFL fee. I highly recommend them. Edit: The M70 didn't come with a cleaning rod, so I picked one up for $15. It looked naked without it.

Good luck with your search!

I've been looking at the underfolder version, but I'm still considering the AB1 instead because a solid stock looks more comfortable and is (I'm assuming) much sturdier. I'd probably switch out for polymer/composite grips and stock though (I'm partial to the modern look with firearms)

But, since this the shottie forum...

how much would a sexy 590 get-up like that cost? Sights are nice for a shotgun, but I can definitely live fine with an inexpensive model like a 500A for around 200 that doesnt come with ghost rings or rifling sights. I'm on a tight budget as well, since I'm already trying to get my hands on an AK first, especially because it's potentially a limited-time offer due to the dems possibly winning this fall...

edit: also, what did you type in to find the deal for the AK you got? I searched for it, and it always comes up with underfolder models only. Do they not sell fix-stock versions on aim anymore?

Crap, you're right. I'd think they will get more in if you interested. You could contact them and find out. The price is $10 less than the underfolder. I went with the traditional stock in the end because it is a range toy, and I wanted something more comfortable to shoot. Doesn't really matter if you are going to swap out the furniture anyway.

Like you, I had always figured on an AK one day. But with the elections coming and lots of candidates hostile to RKBA, I decided to get one now.

The 590A, model # 50663 set me back $385 + tax. From what I can tell, it was a decent price (not a raging deal). I could have gotten the same gun, less ghost rings, for around $330. And honestly at that point, I probably would have gotten a 500A 7+1 like you are looking at for even less. Hard to beat the deal you found.

I like both beads and ghost rings. I decided to go with the ghost rings if I ever decided I wanted to shoot slugs. Unlikely, but it gives me a little more versatility, IMO. And for me, they are also easier to see in lower light conditions. Some people find them distracting, and I respect that. The work pretty fast for me. Personal preference. Although, I do just as well at short range shooting from the hip.

Here's a closer picture of the ghost rings:

Wow who got who? The guy that missed the pawn payments or the pawn shop owner that loaned the money on it

In my area for $250 you can get the 5+1 shot Mossberg Mod 500 12ga with both a 18 1/2" barrer and a spare 28" barrel or the 7+1 shot version with a 20"barrel and no extra barrel. I tried to convince my friend that the 2 barrel set up is the better deal but he just had to have the mag extension version for some reason.

Occasionally I see used Moss 500s around 150, less if lucky. I missed a Ducks unlimited version at $40! The dealer realized it was a mistake in pricing and said $90 but I passed, he should have let me have it as I have bought 20 guns before there but I understand. I saw beat cruiser pg versions at a gunshow last weekend at $130. Got a moss 500 at auction for $137 but it has a broken safety:( Got a older moss 500 20ga crown grade for $100 with 2 barrels. Fixed mod chokes.

It had some minor issues so I sold it for about the same price and kept one of the barrels. Mossberg 500 deals are out there, you just got to look, millions have been produced. I want a bullpup version and a 590. These don't come up used as often.
