Up to speed on Mossberg

No, that is not normal. Every time the action has been 'racked', or 'pumped', and the trigger has not been pulled, you will have to press the release button to allow the slide to move. This is so you can unload a full gun without pulling the trigger, among other things. It also locks the bolt assembly closed so that the shotgun blast pressure doesn't open the bolt during firing, a big no-no. If you have pulled the trigger, the slide should freely move. There are good videos on You Tube to help you with the break-down disassembly of the gun for proper cleaning. Just type in "Mossberg 500 disassemby" in the You Tube box. If you plan to use it for home defense, I would strongly incourage you to learn to disassemble, or 'field strip' the gun, and do it over and over till you can do it in your sleep. It's no big deal at all. The video will help with a couple of small details on how to align the bolt slide on reassembly. Don't be intimidated. You can, and should do this. You have a fantastic home defense weapon in your hands. Respect it, but don't fear it. Like Cus D'Amato, the great boxing trainer of Mike Tyson and many others once said, "Fear can be your friend or your enemy. It can cause you to shake and tremble and completely lose your composure, or it can make you quick, and alert, like a young deer coming across the lawn on a wet morning". Good luck. Here's a picture of my 'Hot Rod Lincoln' so you can see the potential you have. The base gun is what you probably have at home. Explore. Good Luck. memphismark 003-1.gif

If your shotgun was only bought last xmass then there is no way it should be dirty enough to have the problem you described. Unless your brother dropped it in a mud puddle or something.
Your going to need to remove the trigger group and give it a good inspection/cleaning. If you are unsure of yourself then call Mossberg or bring it to a gun shop and have them take a look.
