To all the Mossberg 500E experts.

When did Mossberg change the length on the 500E 410 forend?

I just ordered a synthetic forend but it is too short to fit my older 500E. My shotgun was made in the mid 90's (serial number K0004XX). The part number for the new synthetic forehand is: 16322

Can't be entirely sure, but likely when they changed for a single action bar to a double action bar. I ran into a problem getting a new fore end on my older model 500 in .410.

Looks like the same length change as on other 550/590/88s which were... oh, I forget but I think there are threads here about it.

Those just are a shorter grabby zone; the inside is the same so you can stick the same core in and it works fine. Done 1-2 myself like that (remove metal from wooden one, clean, lube, and put inside new plastic one).

This looks from your photo like the core from the wood one will fit, as the tail on the wood is just cosmetic/handling, not mechanical. Does it really not fit?

Look again at my photos. The new synthetic forend is too short. There is an inch difference. With the synthetic forend installed and nut tightened, you can move the forend an inch without moving the slide tube assembly.

My 500E from the mid 80s has a dual bar 7 5/8" slide tube assembly. The synthetic forend is for a 6 5/8" slide tube assembly.

But what is weird is even though the slide tube assembly on mine is 7 5/8" it also has dual bars. All of the 7 5/8" slide bar assemblies I can find on line are all single bar.

Well since I can't seem to find the correct sized forend AND everyone is out of stock on the 510 Mini stock, I will go to Plan B and just buy another wood stock and cut it down to fit my petite wife.

Sorry, misread the photo. And lots do jump on the OAL being wrong, so I defaulted to that.

I gather you know about the two lengths of the inner tube already as you referred to the one size properly.

Anyway... I thought you could get both still as parts. Who did you order the new one from, and can you ask them if they can trade you, have the same in 7-5/8th?

I checked multiple vendors AND with Mossberg. The only synthetic forend available is the one that I bought.

And on the 500E there is actually three different lengths; 8 7/8", 7 5/8", and 6 5/8" (listed as 6 3/4" by some websites). Numrich lists the 8 /7/8" and 7 5/8" as single bar. But mine is 7 5/8" AND dual bar.

And those lengths don't even include the .410 590 or .410 Shockwave.

Plus I still have to find a 510 Mini stock onto of getting a synthetic forend that fits correctly.

I will most likely leave the wood forend on and buy another wood stock to cut down. The 510 stock would be perfect since the wife needs a 11 1/2" -12" length of pull.

Do you have a side pic of the synthetic forend? Is it the corn cob style?

Is your wife having to reach/stretch her support arm too far?

Here is a side view of the synthetic forend.

The only synthetic corn cob forend that I know of being available is the 410 Shockwave forend. The Shockwave forend is shorter and smaller in width but uses the same 6 5/8" slide tube assembly

My wife will be okay with reaching the forend once I get a stock that fits hers. She has an old Savage Stevens 20 gauge with a cut down stock and she has no problems reaching or working the slide on it. I'm wanting to setup teh Mossberg for her since the 20 gauge is too much for her now days with her MS.

Thanks.

I had a Mav 88 12ga that had a corn cob with dual pinned bars and no inner tube.

I switched it out for one from a field type model (I think from a Moss, it was donated to me) that was longer on the receiver end. The donor said it was referred to as a rat tail or longer rat tail... something like that. The rat tail extended just a bit over the receiver if I remember right. I sold it so I can't check.

I tell ya though.... just that extra 1"- 1 1/2" extra toward the receiver made a big difference comfort wise.
