Hi,

Contemplating a new Mossberg 12 ga. turkey gun (MO camo, 22" bbl, 3.5" chamber, fiber op adj sights [not pistol grip]) and was wondering if the models with the LPA adjustable trigger made a significant difference over a standard Mossberg trigger.

Do Mossberg owners find there is a lot of over-travel or creep in the standard Mossberg triggers?

Thanks for any info.

I've only been turkey hunting once, and it was with a used Mossberg 835.

Shot a turkey at 38 yards just fine, without an adjustable trigger. Load was a Remington 2-3/4" 4x6 Turkey round, as I recall.

I'm a reasonably good shot, not great by any means, and I did okay.

I have a 535 combo......

If I had to do it all over again, I'd get the 835 combo instead...

The 535 is a very light gun and shooting 3½" shells packs a healthy punch!!! I've shot 835's and they don't seem to kick as bad, still kick way too much for me... That being said, I see no reason to shoot 3½" shells ever again!!

As far as the adjustable trigger goes, I don't think I'd want to pay extra for it, but if it's already included..... great!!

Smitty,

I agree that a 3" shotshell will do the job. But if you don't plan to shoot 3 1/2" any longer, would you still rather have the 835? It's about $50 more and a pound heavier. So maybe there would be no advantage to have it. Are there other things about the 835 that you'd rather have?

You got me thinking about the 835, so now I'm trying to compare the two for pros and cons.

I was considering the 535 combo turkey/waterfowl (which you have) - no adj trigger available - vs the straight turkey with the adjustable trigger. The combo seems like a great deal for the money though.

Not really....If I had to have the 3½" capacity, I'd go with a 835, but, if you don't need it, then the 500 is a more versitile gun, there are more aftermarket barrels and accessories for the the 500 than for the 835 & 535, combined...

If you're not stuck on getting a pump, I now shoot my Mossberg 930 almost exclusively.... it has been flawless...

I even took the bright blue barrel and walnut gun turkey hunting this year...

The turkeys didn't seem to care it wasn't camo....

835 has the best quality, overbored and ported barrel for the money. It plus the added weight makes it kick quite a bit less. I could see the trigger maybe being a help if you have recently been patterning heavy loads and have a start on a flinch.:)

Sorry, but I can't answer completely because I've never used the LPA trigger. I do have a Mossberg 500 I've hunted turkeys with for years with the conventional trigger. Out of the box the trigger was a typical shotgun trigger - heavy with a bit of creep. I was able to smooth it up so that it's satisfactory. Warning - a Mossberg 500 trigger assembly is fairly complicated. Don't take one apart unless you are good at reassembling things. Take pictures as you go because there are a lot of springs that have to go back in the correct order, in addition to the usual warnings about working on triggers.

So while a lighter adjustable trigger would be an improvement, I would list it as a "nice to have" rather than "required".

PS If I were convinced that I had to have 3.5" capability, I'd get the 835 with the overbored barrel. Personally, I decided that 3.5" wasn't required, so I opted for the 500.

I've decided I really won't need the adjustable trigger or the 3.5" over bore
(835) model since I think a 3" shell can do the job.

So that gets me to the 535 turkey/waterfowl combo. I can shoot turkeys, geese and even deer with sabot slugs.

Thanks guys for your info and help.
