Why do you want the heavier barrel? Will you be shooting it so much it will make a difference? 50 rounds of buckshot through my regular 500 barrel didn't cause any problems.
yes to the 590
No to the 500.
regular old 500's have a differant means of mounting the barrel and use a screw that screws into the magazine tube where as the 590 uses a nut to hold the 590 barrel to the magazine tube. as well as 500's having 6 shot tubes and 590's having 8 shot tubes.

Partially correct. There are 18.5" AND 20" 590A1 models. There is also at least one 500 (that breacher model 54125) which also has the "clean out" mag tube. I suspect an 18.5" 590A1 barrel will fit on that 500 model, too (pictured below).
Mossberg makes it hard on the logic it uses to assign model numbers.
by definition, 590's only come in 20 inch the 9 in 590 denotes 9 rounds and 9 rounds can only be achieved in the 20 inch setup
mossberg does not list any 6 shot ( 18.5 inch barreled) 590s nor do i remember them doing so. i suspect any outside source selling 18 inch "590s" is just using the name loosly.
