Well I found this real nice, I don't think even used, Mossberg 590A1 US Service Model, 12 Gauge with serial number staring with USSM.

Has "U.S. SERVICE MODEL" on the receiver and very thick barre.

So, they are asking $399. Is that fair?

And how much would it cost to retrofit Mossberg aperture sights?

thanks,

Deaf

590's are usually pricey like Glocks around here (used, private sale), so I would snap it up!

Strange, I just stopped by a local dealer today that was asking $529.00 for that exact model - the only reason I noted price was because of the 590A1 I'd recently bought. So unused, LNIB for $399 should probably be a good deal about anywhere.

But since I'd paid about that same price ($529) for the 590A1 Blackwater Edition, which comes with the X-S Systems top rail, ghost-ring rear sight, white ramp front sight, tri-rail fore-end and speed-feed stock ... hmm, tough call.

I surely favor the Mossbergs over the Rem 870 Police due to the far more logical control locations (action release at rear of trigger guard, tang safety vice action release horribly located in front of trigger guard on left side and stupid cross-bolt safety on rear of trigger guard) ... so if that seems a decent price locally for a virgin 590A1, I'd surely snap it up and pay the fifty bucks or so to get rear ghost-ring and front ramp sights put on ...

Of course, since my employer has long issued the 870 Police Magnum, I'm considered a heretic in local circles (I'll grant the 870 is built like a tank, totally indestructible and far easier to administratively unload), but if I have to use a shotgun in dire circumstances, give me a Mossy ...

Before you start dropping coin on retrofitting ghost ring sights, spend some serious range time with the bead on a flat fixed sight system already on the shotgun. You may find the original sights to be quite adequate.

The variety of slugs available for the big smoothbore make it fairly easy to find a load that shoots "to the bead." With foster style one ounce slugs, there are several velocity levels available from 1200 to 1600 fps to "adjust" elevation.

Take a look at this "slugfest" video. A 590A1 with bead sight is used out to 80 yards with Federal one ounce "Deep Penetrator" rounds @ 1350 fps.

Well put. Exactly why i switched over to 590A1s from Rem 870 polices, especially for a leftie, the Mossy controls are so much better.

From a cost perspective, you would likely be better off just buying the 590a1 with the ghost ring sights you want than trying to do a conversion. I had a beaded 590 that I converted to ghost rings. It would have cost me less to have sold the 590 I had and then bought the 590a1 model I wanted. Such is life.
