Anyone have a Mossberg 695 bolt-action 12 guage? I picked one up recently but have yet to shoot it. I just mounted an Accu-Dot scope on it and will be getting out to the range shortly.

I'm just curious if there are others who could provide some insight regarding thier experiences with this shotgun,

Thanks in advance .....

Yes, I have a Mossberg 695 fully rifled barrel. I'll say this up front. Treat it like a big rifle.

I bought mine for deer hunting. Set up with a 2.5 power simions scope. I was afraid if went with any thing more powerful I'd end up takeing long shots. I always have a sling on it in the field, set up to aid in shooting off hand.

I'm currently useing Lightfield sabot slugs and can group 3.5" under field conditions at 100 yards. The older Remington Copper Sabot was a little more accurate, but Lightfeild is cheaper.

Now the bad news;
The trigger is a shotgun trigger.

The beast kicks! You'll only want to fire a few rounds at a time.

My 695 was on the recall a couple of years back, and I had to send it in for inspection. Nothing was wrong with mine. Don't know what the reason was behind the recall, but I belive it had to do with 'kitchen table gunsmiths' putting the bolt back together wrong. Read the instruction book, on disameble and reasmeble of the bolt.

The finish on mine is like a baked on parkirized rough dull coat finish. Have never found a wipe that won't leave behind some thing on the finish. There for I use a spray to coat the outside gun metal.

The magazine floor plate seems to catch in the well when loading the magazine, a quick slap brings the shell up to the lips before loading. Never had a problem in the feild with this always, pop, and up the shells come before loading the magazine.

Lastly it is a pain, but can be done, that is to load a single round through the top of an open bolt. You have to put the shell in towards the back of the bolt, not drop the the round right into the chamber, and then let the bolt load it into the chamber. Something better praticed at home than trying figure it out in the field.

Like I said earlier, mine is for deer hunting and is far superior to my Mossberg 500 with rifled sighted slug barrel. I would not trade it right now for anything else to do the same job.

My dad has one and so does another guy we hunt with. My dad has never had a problem other then the sling breaking. Which of course has nothing to do with the gun. I have shot it a couple times, but I prefer my 870. My dad has gotten hit in the nose a few times by the scope. Other then that he likes it.

Our friend on the other hand doesn't like his so much. First of all he has missed about three or four deer with it in the last three years. His fault if you ask me. A little bit of buck fever. Then this year he didn't actually miss. The gun wouldn't go off. As if the safety would not disengage. Lucky for him it happened the last days of the season.

Personally I like the 695. I am a bolt action kind of guy. I love working the bolt before each shot. I do have to say that I think it is the ugliest gun I have seen in a while.

Good luck with yours and good shooting.

GrantLee, over on TFL there's a thread about The Ugliest Shotgun in Howard County. It's about a B/A Mossberg I had. You may find it entertaining.

If I still had the thing,it'd be wearing something like a 3X Leopold now, have glass bedding and a long cone. Possibly even an E R Shaw rifled bbl.

I too have a Mossberg 695

Has anyone found a place to buy aftermarket stocks for this gun? I would like to put a wood stock on in place of the synthetic stock stock. :)

Dave, I finnaly decided to start the work on my 395. I contacted Shaw back in October about the rifled barrel. The no longer offer the service.
:banghead: I guess he who hesitates...
Looks like I might have to use it as my rabbit/squirrel gun just so it doesn't get ignored.

Sorry about that,he who hesitatesl...

Still, one can make up a great slug gun from a Mossberg BA.

I have had one of these guns for about 7 years and love it (heart shot shot 4 out of the last 5 deer i have shot)except for a string of problems I have had and I am hoping somebody can shed some light into it.

Here is the gun setup.....Simmons red dot site, stock shaved and thick recoil pad added, trigger pull smoothed.

I have always shot Lightfield 3" in it. The first problem to develop was the magazine would come loose every time it was shot. I took it to a gunsmith and came back with a new recoil pad, trigger job, and a gun that still dropped the magazine when it was fired. Took it to a different gunsmith and he did something to the magazine I think to keep it in (not sure going to check tomorrow).

The new problem, and it only happens with one of my two magazines is once the shell is ejected the gun jams. It wont feed the new shell. It first happened last year, I shot a deer and immediately attempted to chamber another shell. The next shell got stuck entering the chamber, luckily it jammed just as the deer was taking one final leap in the air and landing dead (heart shot). I figured I hadnt pulled the bolt back far enough for it to grab the shell and thought nothing more of it.

I shot the gun again yesterday at another deer and it happened again, more luck (or great gun) history repeated itself (another heart shot). When I went back to the truck I pulled the spent hull out and replicated ejecting the shell and it happened again. I changed magazines and the problem seemed to go away.

Sorry for the long first post, but has anyone heard of these problems? I will take it to the gunsmith who had it last (couple years ago), hopefully they have records on what they did.

Thanks

I have the same problem with my clip dropping out after every shot. I bent the catch lever a bit to hold better. Unfortunately, I haven't been shooting with it yet this year to find out if it still does it. How is your trigger after the work? I want to have my trigger worked on, but don't trust too many gunsmiths in the Alton area.

My regular Illinois deer gun for the last six years.
I have a Burris 1.5X5 scope on mine now and a Kick-Eze recoil pad.
The strap on cheek pad also aids in making the gun somewhat pleasant to shoot.
My slug of choice is Winchester Platinum Tip sabot slugs.
I agree this really isn't a shotgun anymore, with the right loads it rivals many of the old blackpowder elephant guns in power and recoil.

You can add a wooden stock to this gun by using a Mossberg 395 stock but you will also need to add all the magazine parts and the floorplate/triggerguard parts for that version too.

After the trigger job it is awesome! very smooth

I dont know what they did to keep the magazine dropping out. I called the smith who did the work and he told me he is sure they didnt do anything to the magazine....maybe he knows what the problem is with those guns.

He told me the shell feeding problem was just lubrication in the magazine so i will give that a try.

if you need a reputable smith and dont mind driving to the springfield area, try Ogelsby & Ogelsby....they do awesome work and are very easy to deal with.

I really like the Lightfield 3" mag slug, too bad they quit making it....but since I shoot an awesome gun and generally heart shoot them i have enough for 7 more deer.

My problem has never been with the cheek pad, I had to shoot this thing about 10 times a few years ago and it kicked the livin crap out of my shoulder, to the point i developed a flinch in the process. I ended up putting about 100 rounds through a single shot .22 to get rid of it.

Interesting about the magazines falling out ..... I've had my 695 since 2001, and have never had any problems with the magazine - or - anything else for that matter with this fine shotgun.

I my 695 and consider myself fortunate that I was able to buy one before Mossberg discontinued making them. ($199.00 NIB at the local Dunham's Sporting Goods store!)

Just wanted to drop in and show you a pic of my 695. I had www.gatewood.com make a stock for it. The cheap plastic one didn't fit me that well. I also had all metal teflon coated, trigger gold platted and re worked to make it lighter. I use a 3-9x40 vx II Leupold. I will try to get a new pic of it completly put together. I love this thing. I have used it for 6 years and a lot have deer have been droped by this gun. I hope you all enjoy

Ok, I have been following this thread for a while and just now finally decided to enter my own post. The 695 in my opinion is a fantastic gun. I applaud you owners who got one before the recall/dist. I have not missed with mine yet. I have taken 15 Michigan deer with mine at distances from 20 feet to 120yards. Federal Barnes Expanders 3/4oz, 2 3/4 inch. Not one problem. Keep your slug power low (that is the secret). It helps the 1in35 twist grab the sabot correctly of proper travel and the porting takes care of the rest. I use a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 scope mounted on Williams raised rings so I can see my rifle sights. Flawless!

Trigger is no problem, sure it is heavy, but if you take your time and practice a lot there is no need for expensive modification. I have shot many of these deer on the run and accuracy could not be better. Slugs I have tried are Rem. Copper Solids, Wichester Gold, Hornady SST, Federal DRI, Brenekke, Lightfield Elites. Fed. Barnes Expanders shoot the best. Lightfield Elites are good but I have a problem with them in high wind.

I love the wood stock modification, but with the all-terrien type hunting I do here in Mid-Michigan I would be angry if I got it scratched. Besides, there are not many guns out there that can take the beating I give to my 695.

Everytime I go to the range I always attact a crowd with my mean looking 695 printing 2 inch at 100 yard groups. One guy said last year "that gun is one mean canon"! Everyone always asks me, What is that? Where did you get it? Here in this part of my state the 870 or 500 rule in shotgun zones. Rifles up north! I take my 695. You cannot beat it. Tarhunt is nice, but I talked Fritz at Tarhunt and he said the 695 is perfect for the any hunter looking for a low cost rig to get them in the yardage game. If you have one he can accurize it for around $600. Not necessary, but if a slug god like Fritz can make your 695 even better, why not!

In response to "clip falling out"

U just boucht a model 695 yesterday... i put a scope on it and took it out to the range, and just like some of you.... every shot my clip came out.

Im a curious fellow... and keep in mind i'm no expert, but looking at the gun it's obvious that we are talking about a problem with the spring steel catch that is supposed to hold the clip in.

the gun disassembles very easily... one screw. Im glad i did so i could clean thoroughly..

ok back on topic. the trigger assembly is mounted with what appears to be a screw and a pin. the screw is also used to clamp the clip guide and catch in place.

the catch is designed to snap into position once the clip is high enough into the channel that it reaches the narrow part of the catch. Upon investigation "my spring was sprung"

i removed the catch and guide being careful not to let the trigger assembly free ( just in case) I straightened the catch and placed slight bend right where the catch turns narrow ( the bend was in a direction that allows the narrow to be tight against the guide with no interference from anything else.

step 2 was to slightly bend the upper portion of the catch so that it creates greatwer force against the guide when reaasembled.

reassemble and notice the difference!!!

I am not sure if I'll have to do this again and it may be wise to order a couple replacement catches as I bet they wear out in time. My gun was used.

I still have to give it a good slap to seat the clip but it stays now.

Good luck folks!!

I have had a mossberg 695 for 4 years now

Yet me tell u that this gun will blow ur mind away. I have had it for the last 4 whitetail seasons in Michigan. I have shot deer from about 50 yards to 120 yards accurately. Most of the deer i have shot, the bullets have gone right through the deer. When i sight in, i have approx. 1 foot of thick wood, and the bullets i have go right through my target. so watch out whats behind the target. I have experimented with many bullets and i hav found u hav to find the bullet that matches ur gun. Remington copper solid sabots r good but r a little bit more expensive. I am currently using Winchester BR Sabot Slugs, 2 3/4, they go 1300fps. Both of these slugs do great damage and they both have tremendous stopping power. I have a simmions scope on it, so make sure the scope is tight, it will get lose quick, because thsi has some serious power and kick to it. I believe this gun could take a lot of things down. Deer, hogs, Elk would have to be close but this gun can go the distance accuratley.

I just picked up a Model 695 that has had less than 10 slugs put through it and is in mint shape for $150. I'll be giving it a workout up in the woods here outside Ely, Minn., this season. So far, I'm REALLY liking what I see and feel.

695 Magazine

I thought it was just me with the magazine issue. I've owned the gun for years but only hunted with it once. I was in a treestand and fired at a buck and the magazine came out and fell to the ground. Since the first shoot worked I wrote it off to not seating the mag. I'm back in a shotgun only area so I will dust off the cobwebs and try the tips listed in this thread.
What is everyone using to clean the outside of this gun barrel?

695 in Michigan

I bought my Model 695 Mossberg w/a 22 inch barrel in 2001 from Battle Creek, Michigan and have had great success with my weapon hunting whitetail deer and coyote. I found that the Remington 3 inch Copper Solid gives maximum performance for distance and accuracy and for knock down power. The 12 guage kicks like a mule with magnum shells but the butt of the weapon has been retro fitted with a recoil free pad to reduce kick and shoulder discomfort. The vented barrel belches out some serious flames and was approached 2 years ago by a Conservation Officer that was hunting himself and asked to see the caliber of my rifle. We both got a good laugh when I kicked out a 3 inch 12 guage slug from the chamber. He said he say the flash when I fired 1/2 hr before sunset and the report sounded like a magnum rifle which it does. No rifles are allowed in the Southern Michigan hunting zones. The Model 695 is not my only slug gun for deer hunting but the other shotguns have been left for the shooting range since buying this gun. I have a 3X9 duplex scope that adapts well to the long range shots often taken on the farms we hunt and the longest killing shot was with my son in 2006 taking a nice deer at just over 130 yards. This weapon is no kids gun for learning and in my opinion is that because of the weight and kicking power when shooting. The recoil compares to my 300 winchester magnum rife. Avlin sales is a good bet for parts for the 695 since it has been discontinued and Mossberg will also send a new part when you send the old part as was the case for a new trigger assembly when mine was damaged. Hold onto the Model 695 if you have one and anyone wants to get rid of theirs...contact me. I swear on these weapons and would love to own another!
