old idea for a new project- Mossy 695.

Greetings:

A long, long time ago I considered the merits of building up an bolt-action shotgun for deer and pig critters as well as the sheer fun of making big holes in things like paper targets. For reasons not worth discussing now, the project never came to fruition.

Yesterday I ran across a 'previously loved' Mossberg 695; rifled barrel, plastic stock (with no apparent cracking) that appeared to have much less than a full box of shells run through it ( I can't imagine why ). The price was $250, which I bet has some wiggle room in it when the Dead Presidents get flashed.

Now, I don't have any illusions of laser-beam accuracy like a full-house slug gun from one of the custom builders, and I know my shooting distance is going to be limited to about 100 yards, 150 at absolute most with quality saboted slugs.

Ogre has a great link on his site regarding the IPSF and their use of something quite akin to what I'd like to end up with.

Bed the action, take care of the lugs or replace the stock entirely with something more durable, put a medium-grade scope on it and stick a fork in it. Anyone think this is a workable idea, or should I just stick the idea back on the shelf for another 20 years?

Good project and a thoroughly useful shooter after.

12 gauge rifles are not that hard to build using these as a platform. TUSIHC was a first step towards just this. If I were putting one together now, it'd be a lot like this.

Triggers on these need some work, but any smith can fix it.

I'd free float the barrel, but I'd be ready to shim under the forend to add some pressure if needed.
